Remove and Replace DME Temp Sensor on 944 Late?
Anyone got a step by step walk through to remove and replace the DME temp sensor on a 86 944?

Get a fluid evacuator (Mityvac or similar) and remove the bleed screw from the top of the coolant elbow on the front of the engine. Using a thin tube with the evacuator, insert the tube into the bleed opening and suck out the coolant down to the level of the sensor. Remove the wiring from the sensor. Remove the sensor with a deep socket. Install the new sensor and washer. Connect the wiring. Pour back the coolant and bleed the system. Install and tighten the bleed screw.

Instead of a deep socket, I used a 'crows foot" worked well.
![]() I put a thin bead of Curil T on the threads although it is probably not necessary. You need to move the JBoot off of the TB but you do not have to disconnect the rest of the vac lines. Be gentle. J_AZ

I just used a deep socket, unscrewed, screwed in and connected new sensor. Really easy. Get a shop rag to catch the small burp of coolant that will come out. Do it with the engine totally cold

Thanks. Anyone use FAE sensors since the Bosch ones didn't last 4 years?

Yes, I changed out my DME TS earlier this year and went with the FAE.. So far so good.. Only had about 2-3 oz of cold coolant leech out the bung.. Took less than 20 mins tops.. GLWR

I spent the money and went with German VDO. Works great

That was one of the easier projects I've had to deal with on these cars. As GAW said, unscrew it, replace it, re-bleed the system. Rags didn't have to deal with much coolant loss. Maybe an ounce.
