Got some more questions...Plz Help!

Ok...first off, Lately I have had a problem with hesitation. I think only when cold...but basically when i give it gas at low rpms, like 2000, it slowly accelarates to 3000 or so...then rockets. Almost like lag or a nasty power curve...but it is a 83 N/A. Did someone sneak a turbo in it overnight?...I checked with no luck...darn. This problem faded on in about a week..and now it bothers me. It varies from 2000-3000rpm...but it is a definate lag feeling. When i took it in to the doctor for a checkup before this problem, he said this....My car has always been real cranky about starting when warm (pardon the pun) It has to turn alot before it kicks. I always thought that this was my fuel checkvalve...but what do I know. The Doc said it could be my MAF causing it hard starting. Could my MAF also be causing my elusive turbo lag? Another thing i am considering(keep in mind I suck at diagnostics) is that my fuel pump is going. There is a low whine back there independant on speed/rpms/gear etc, but when I turn electric stuff on and off like fan, the note changes. I thought the only electric thing back there is the fuel pump. Am I right, or retarded? Are there tell tale signs of a failing pump? And Last but not greatest, My clutch is goofy. My hypothesis is the rubber clutch stuff, but please tell me i am wrong. When letting the clutch out the car "bounces" forward. When i let off the gas it "bounces" back. Sometimes there might be a thud in there. The car has 163K laps around the block and i don't know the age of the clutch...but I would guess old if not original. The PO was a poor dope. I also am thinking, no hoping, that is is just my mounts, like motor mounts or tranny mounts. I think this is unlikely...but I know my motor mounts should be replaced. Thank you for your help. I need it! Are there any ways to test my clutch or fuel pump? thanks again.

Clutch: Check the inspection hole or remove the starter and look for hunks of rubber. If they are there, your clutch is on its way out.

Motor mounts will cause excessive vibration at idle.

Some lag at the low end is normal, the car really doesn't kick in untill about 3300 - 3500 or so. Some of this may be driver related - how are you driving it? There is nowhere in the curve where the car should bog down however.

Fuel pump - The only reliable method to test is by measuring fuel volume as detailed in the haynes manual. Though I have to confess, the whine back there does sound a bit ominous.

AFS (chances are you don't have a MAF) Check your electrical contacts and check voltage/resistance as detailed in the haynes manual

Well, these should give you a start.

Ok, I will check the clutch inspection hole...although i am fearing the worst. Say it is scrambled...is it quite hard to replace? and Pelican has a kit for 700 or so would you suggest that or an alternative? I do have the ability to use a lift and have an automechanic help me, and i have resonable skills. i have worked on old bugs up the yin yang, including the clutch, so I understand how it all works on a simple scale. Do you think with the appropriate manuals and time it is possible to do myself? or should i fork the dough? (assuming it needs to be done that is) My car has the definition of excessive vibration. At idle its crazy. Bad motor mounts I am guessing then. Chaulk another item on the todo list. We aren't talking "some" lag. This is quite alot of bog, and it only has recently started. It definately feels something has gone wrong. By the way, I drive the car pretty hard if that is relevant. i will do the fuel volume test as suggested...but I do think something is wrong with the pump....i have a hunch by the odd sound...definately electrically controlled. yes, my bad...I did mean AFS not MAF, i caught that after i posted..but was too lazy to edit. I will also do the manaully thingy here. Thank you for the suggestions. If anyone else has had this issue, or issues, please feel free to tell me how you fixed it, or didn't and waisted money on. Now the last resort. Should I take it in and have it checked out?
