1984 speedometer input?

I have a 1986 automatic 944 and just changed the transmission.
The transmission I mounted is from a 1984 model. It works fine but my speedometer doesn't work anymore for the obvious reason there is nothing to plug the connector on the top of the transaxle.
Does anyone knows where from the speedometer gets its input on the 1984 model - because it seems to be definitely different than the post 185 1/2 models ?

Cable to the left front wheel though a hole drilled down the center of the spindle. End of cable engages the grease cup on the end of the hub. You could get the early spindle and put it on your later model but the speedo for the later models is totally electric -- no place for a cable. Can't even swap the old one into the newer instrument cluster.

Something about a sewage creek and no paddle goes here.

Guess you need to find a conversion chart for the gear and rpm's or a late model automatic transmission.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

The speedo on all 944 models up to 1/85 is by cable off the left front wheel. There is no way of installing a cable-drive speedo into your car. Get the shop to carefully check the new trans as during the change over years some transmissions (at least the manual versions, don't know about autos) had the casting for the electric speedo. Otherwise, if you need the sppedo to work you need the correct transmission. If the diff was ok, you can just change the diff unit onto the new trans, but make sure you do change all the o-rings.
