i need help...answers..heh..anyone?

ok so here i am in the middle of ma project.... to create a master piece of a personal ride using the 44 as my platform... and i know how most of the purists feel about after market upgrades, however this is more a referance or personal clarification i need now...
the 944 series came in the 944, 944 turbo, the 944 s2 and a cabriolet style.. where does the 951 designation come from? was it a referance just to the turbo editions? was it a special upgrade or conversion they did at the wharehouse?
i read in excellence magazine that the 951 designation was only what some people referred to the 944 3.o's as.. can someone please clarify me on this point... possibly someone directly from pelican or someone who can show me some referance s to where i can see this information... thanx a bunch

...p.s. ; to those of u who i have talked to, and have shared some advice and information with me... i have some news for you i have now gotten ma first 2 rolls of pics taken as well as a small video of the initial project start ...as soon as i can find a scanner ill post some pics on the site for ya all thanx again for your help so far and im sure ill be needing more in the future

951 was the Porsche internal designation for the 944 Turbo - it just kind of carried over into common use
If you look on many of the turbo parts, you will see the part numbers start with 951.

Other tidbits:

944: 2.5l
944T (951) 2.5l turbo
944 (MY 1989) 2.7l
944S 2.5l 16 valve engine
944S2 3.0l 16 valve engine
945 any 944 NA with RHD

Pick up ORIGINAL PORSCHE 924/944/968 by Peter Morgan. it is pretty much the bible of 944 information (serial numbers, history, development, etc), along with the BROOKLANDS BOOKS 944 ULTIMATE PORTFOLIO, and, of course, the good old Hayne's Manual.

My son and I just bought a 87 944 this week (Father/Son project) and I'd love to get my hands on the two books that you mentioned. Suggestions to where I can find them?????

We're going to swap motors so I'm trying to get up to speed on 944's before we start turning wrenches. Any other suggested reading (I'm getting a Haynes 944 book Friday) would be greatly appreciated.

Haynes is an excellent place to start - there are a ton of websites around.

If you have questions, ask them here there is a ton of experience here available for free.

ORIGINAL PORSCHE 924/944/968 is available at just about any Borders' or Barnes and Noble. Check around. The Haynes manual you can probably pick up at a Pep Boys or AutoZone. The Brooklands Book may be a little harder to find, I ordered mine right from Brooklands Books in the UK. This one is great, but not a necessity; it's really just a bunch of reviews and road tests from CAR AND DRIVER, ROAD AND TRACK, AUTOMOBILE, etc. from when the 944 is in production. I would definitely seek out the Haynes book and ORIGINAL PORSCHE first, as they are more crucial and less for recreational reading.

I've been "Scoping" the post for the past week and I've noticed how helpful everyone is to those in need. Believe me, I will be in need, soon, so y'all will be seeing more of me.

I've restored a few Mustangs from basket case to finish (my current car has a stroked 351W w/470 hp) and it handles better than most cars (NOT BETTER than a Porsche), but heading into "Porsche Land" will be an interesting experience. We have about a year to get the running so we have time, just need some patience (sp?).

we all love to talk about Porsches, and helping out the less knowledgeable is a great way to do it... and please don't take this as bragging: compared with some of these guys, I know next to nothing about these cars... but the more you visit the site, the more you learn.

I am yet to find any books on the 944 series that doesn't have countless errors though, so don't take EVERYTHING you read in them as the "gospel".

hmm thanks for the replies all its great to know we can come here to one site and count on people to pitch in and help when we need it it makes this whole process all the more enjoyable.
well to update a few, ive decided to go back to ma origional idea.. which is to drive the stock engine with a few minor upgrades and modifications... and save for a better or maybe not better but a higher output motor and matching tranny for a later date... for now ill concentrate on the body and interior upgrades...
for those that dont know, this project started kind of as a response to our local car club scene...where as typical to any other place (except europe maybe) the ricer market has been eating everyone alive. for me i had a tibouron done pretty good as well... but i decided to take ma old 44 and create something new with it... something to put the local ricers in there place so to say. maybe its vanity, maybe its pride, but when u sink enuff money and time and creativity into anything it can be top notch. so to take a 5 or 10 k honda and sink 20 grand into it or better to make it somethin to rival a euro (and still fall short) it seems pointless why someone doesnt do the same to a euro and create somethin untouchable to the ricers. (thats the theory for our local anyhow as were not really exposed to many porsches here) so for me it was to build a new car club based on euro vehicles with the 944 as the focal vehicle... so far theres now 4 in our little group which is pretty un organized (not for long) and we all have 44's which were investing tme n money into... im pretty excited about the prospects so far, and i cant wait till the first ones are done. i know ill be using as much info as u guys can throw at me in between times, which ill be adding to a collective database im building strictly for this purpose...
anyhow yes... im looking forward to this adventure more and more everyday, and i thank you all again for the advice givin, as well as the advice yet to come...
out of curiousity has anyone here ever held an irl meeting/event from the ranks of the pelican board(S)?
