Snowflake switch replacement?

I have a replacement A/C switch for my '87 944 N/A. Can anyone tell me how to get the old one out? Do I have to remove the clear plastic plate, and if so does it come out with it? Also, I could not get the fan speed knob off! Clearly this needs to come off if I have to remove the plate.

Thanks, Tom.

Great pictures. I am still a bit confused! On an 87 is the switch socketed? If so can I pull it out? On one of these pictures the switch is in and on the next it is removed. Clearly I am missing something!!

After much Googling I just came to that conclusion also. Not a huge deal since I have a number of people working for me who have de-solder stations. I can borrow one or even have an expert do it for me. Biggest worry is actually getting the back off without cracking everything. I think that I will wait for warmer weather so every thing is a bit more flexible.

Thanks for your help. For now I shall drive it to a bar. Still really happy about how a new oxygen sensor improved its running.

Done! The whole thing took just under an hour. It is a fiddley pain but not horrible. The biggest issue is that my hands shake like hell. I think I need to drink more, or is it less.

The hardest parts are just carefully getting the back off the unit and then getting the desoldered switch off of the front plate. I ended up cutting the little tabs that hold in in place off with a knife.

Well now my ac switch lights up and stays in.
