First post in this section - new to me S2 - Cranks won't start

I have a bunch of experience on the 911 end.

Picked up a S2 to have some fun with.

Had a friend look at the car in KC - checked out for the most part.

Had it delivered - guy started it right up - backed it off the transport - put it in the driveway.

We admired for a little bit - went to put in the garage - and it wouldn't start.

Cranked over - Tach not jumping -

no power to 86 on the DME Relay. tried a spare (luckily uses the same as the 964 engine in my 1974)

Under the dash - looks like a speaker for an aftermarket alarm?

Tried to by pass the alarm - and heated up some wires - poking around the fuse box and it looks like it has a few hacks to bypass maybe a brake light.

So what I've done -

- Charged the battery to 100%
- Changed out the DME Relay
- Tested to see if there was voltage at 86 with the key on at the dme relay (there was not)
- bypassed the factory alarm - lead 1 got hot
- removed distributer cap - checked and cleaned all contacts.
- removed coil and cleaned and checked all contacts
- tried installing the fuse at (12) for the factory alarm - alarm went off - even with key in the ignition.

Definitely seems like an immobilizer - some sort of block - car turns over - and again - it ran well when they backed it off the trailer - but now

where to go from here?

When you say "alarm went off", was it the questionable speaker or the horn near the battery that went off?

To eliminate the DME relay as a possible cause, use a two wire jumper (with three male spade connectors) to the three large female contacts in the fuse block.

If the tach still does not bounce, then check for a bad connection at the flywheel sensor (your 944S2 has only one sensor).

Horn near the battery

So if I do the three spade connector to the fuse box and the tach does not bounce -- then my next step is to check the flywheel sensor (or bosch reference sensor)

Try the dme jumper and see what happens. When my factory alarm failed, I had very similar issues.

Fyi, the tach on my S2 does't bounce when it is starting.

I would yard out that aftermarket alarm, who knows what gremlins lurk there. Maybe a kill switch that got bumped?

So for the 1989 S2 - or at least in my case - do not follow Clark's Garage's Alarm System - Bypassing

You will melt the wires! use this (seems this works for the cars with the 928 Alarm relay)

Here's how to wire past the OEM Alarm on a 1989 951 - Rennlist Discussion Forums

(I did get this to work and got the car started)
