Slow difficult start
My '83 has of late been slow to start, sometimes almost drains the battery, but when it finally does, runs and idles normally. After the car is warmed up and shut off, difficult start again. I'm pretty sure this is fuel- related since the car runs fine when it finally starts. Not sure where to start? Replace fuel filter ( been a few years), injectors, fuel pump?
I have relocated to AZ and am planning on selling this car, except for the starting issue it is in pretty good shape. Don't really know what it is worth, but I'll never get out of it what I've put into it

Pop the distributor cap off and look at the rotor and cap condition. I spent a week chasing what I thought was a fuel issue when I had similar symptoms, and it turned out my rotor was wasted. I was amazed at how well it ran like that

Have you checked the fuel pressure? Arnnworx sells a gauge for $40 that threads right to the rail, it's money well spent on cars like this.

Wow...it's unbelievable that the car still ran with the rotor chewed up like that! In my case, the rotor is new, I just replaced the water pump and had the whole thing apart ( distributor) so pretty sure it's a fuel problem.
Sausagehacker, I don't really want to buy more tools since I'm going to sell the car, but I suspect it may be a fuel pressure problem. I'll try replacing the fuel filter and go from there.

The problem sounds like a fuel pump issue to me. It's easy enough to dismount the rail and verify the injectors are working. There is also a threaded cap at the end of the fuel rail that can be removed so a fuel pressure gauge can be installed. I wouldn't pull the fuel rail out though and expect to reinstall it without purchasing the injector O-ring kit from our host.

Steve - did you get it figured?
My 83 is now slow to start - cranks but takes awhile to fire up. I'm pretty sure it's the check valve in the fuel line down by the fuel pump. I hooked up my fuel pressure gauge to see how long it took to drain down the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Turned out to be a few seconds! It's supposed to hold pressure so it's easier to start. HTH
