Adding power steering to 1983 944

My 1983 944 didn't come stock with power steering. I saw from AutoZone that a replacement power steering pump is $200 and a rack&pinion is $173. Add a few more dollars for hoses and the total price is about $500. That's a nice upgrade to have for $500.

Has anyone done this before? Is it even possible?

Thanks

People will pay a fair bit for your manual setup. You might get core charges for some of those parts but it'd be better to get some core parts to turn in from a part-out or pay the core charge. Your rack and intermediate shaft are pretty desirable. I think I'll also suggest that your car as an early car with manual steering is desirable and more valuable as stock so you might consider just getting a different car with the features you want.

If I had a manual steering rack, I wouldn't go to Power.
Power is nice when it works...*when* being the key word.

Someone already mentioned that manual racks are actually considered as a modification upgrade from power steering. I had power steering and replaced it with a manual rack and Iove the way the manual rack feels. If you desire power steering,go for it. There's lots guys around with complete power steering racks, hoses, pumps and resivoirs sitting around

Probably save some coin selling the car and buying one with power steering. You might actually make money on that deal and come out with a cleaner car.
