Electrical issues
Haven't been on here for a long time as my 914/6 build is sucking up more time than I have, the 944 has been sadly neglected, long story short I have a buyer for my 85 and my 89 parts roller.
The buyer wants the 85 running ,last time I tried starting it I had a sensor issue,no tach bounce no fuel etc, we all know that issue ![]() Replaced both sensors and tried to start it then smelt that horrible burning smell, found DME relay had burned up because water had entered it because of a hole in the battery tray ![]() My question is it correct to assume the ECU will be toast also ???. TIA gents.

There is no way to tell for sure if it is bad except to see if it starts the car or to test it. I had a leaking battery tray and the car was missing and it turned out to be a bad injector harness plug. Found that problem after buying a 2nd DME.
You can open it up and look for water damage. You can also send it to 944online for testing if you can get it through customs. Or you could test it in another car. By the way I used POR-15 and fiberglass matt to repair the battery tray. It is literally a paint on repair and can be done in a few hours. Let everything dry out, even open up the DME, replace the relay, and maybe it will start. Hopefully your harness isn't damaged from water. |

Thanks for the reply, the water effected 3 relays ,the DME ,cooling fan,and one other standard 4 pin I haven't yet identified,I managed to dry out 2 others which were damp inside and they are fine.
I hope to try a start today but may use a jumper wire for the DME as I have one burn contact in the relay board.

Is this a LHD car with battery and DME on right side (footwell) and relay board on left?
Make sure the DME electronics board is dry before you apply power to it or it could get damaged. Also make sure the harness in the footwell to the DME board is dry too so there cant be any shorts when you apply power. |

![]() Installed both sensors and check running gaps were ok,had no tach bounce or spark with replacement relay so fitted jumper wire and bingo won a price ![]() Sorted why it won't run with the stock relay so have to make a repair to a burnt section of the relay board. Firstly I might power up a spare pump I have to get it running. Real happy ECU is ok,i'am going to remove the Rogue chip and induction kit as that's not included in the sale but will get it running first.

Finally removed fuel pump after testing it in place and finding it was locked up solid,
hose from the bottom of the tank was in poor condition and eventually split when clamped off,the resulting flood of fuel was WAY more than the 5 litres I added to an empty tank ![]() ![]() The end result was minor flood of stinking foul stale fuel which managed to get everywhere, packed up for the night and went inside for a shower the a beer ![]() Should be able to sort another pump but the lower hose from tank will be an issue. Will update later cheers.

Sorry to hear about the fuel spill. If you were keeping the car you would replace both lines under there even if you can't get crimped lines, you could use double clamps using standard fuel line. There is an inline strainer that threads in to the tank where that hose connects. The 3 lines in the engine compartment ditto. There are lots o threads on this board about this.

Fitted good pump from 89 parts car and made up a temp replacement tank to pump hose, tested it running jumper wire for pump relay and fuel flowing and returning as it should.
It appears I have no injector pulse as the engines fires on engine start, not a 100% on the spark as it appears weak, however that could have been my battery going flat. I would guess the injectors could be gunked up judging by the condition of the bad fuel. Plan is the following; check coil and connections, remove ecu, check loom plug etc, clean all earth connections, check for power @ injectors, remove and clean injectors, have a spare set I can run, repair relay board so I can run DME relay. Thanks for the tip on the fuel hoses, all the rest have been checked/replaced when I did the engine conversion,I know I was too rough clamping of the tank hose....my fault. Will report back, cheers.

Need help before I hit the bottle...
Ok ,here we go ;
opened ECU and it has suffered from moisture,no bad solder joints however, cleaned up, made up LED noid light and it flashes quickly on and off on cranking, have power @ injectors on both sides, removed injectors and cleaned them, all cracking off. Things I don't know yet, water in fuel tank causing filter to block, its very new ?, bad earths ,haven't done that yet but been thru before, ignition switch....don't trust it as no longer have cranking as of 5 mins ago....... ![]() ![]() ![]()

Worked on old ignition switch while waiting for replacement to arrive, found centre contact very dirty, cleaned that up,refitted and car now cranking again,it fired twice then nothing.
Old switch is cracked @ the top were the return spring fits, just like the one out of my 914 did. I'am going to change the plugs today and will most likely do the fuel filter,i did notice some moisture on the plugs so think there has been water in the fuel, car has been outside with around 15-20 litres of fuel in the tank.

Changed out ignition switch and have working injectors, however I now have no spark, plugs are wet with fuel........this is driving me nuts and to add to my woes the buyer has pulled the pin on the sale
![]() I still believe Iam not getting enough power to the engine as my voltage is dropping away too much when cranking,I'am questioning the condition of the starter motor ![]() I still feel commited to gets it going as I still need to sell it,I don't want to keep it as its not being used.
