Reset procedure
Am new to wonderful world of Porsche and what better way to start than diving into a basically full restoration of a '82 928 with a good mechanical back ground (Red Seal Automotive Service Technician) a marginal service manual and a customer that says JUST DO IT.
What I am hung up on is got the car running after an approx 8 year sleep. The warning lights on the dash and the information center is my issue is there a reset procedure for these or am I still looking for more issues? Have a list of stuff to sort out so may be back with more questions but car is almost ready to head for paint and body then I get the fun of double checking everything and bringing this beasty back to life. Any other tips or tricks to do with this one would be greatly appreciated thanks T.J. |

You need a set of service manuals, at a minimum the version on a CD from Jim Morehouse jim928@ptd.net
What area are you in? Warning system generally resets itself, but I seem to remember it may take a touch on the brakes to put the light out after starting. If no pod light is on, chances are good its had the bulb removed or burnt out. Restoration is the best way to go, once the car is taken down to the frame and you have all new wiring harnesses etc. in it the job gets much easier. Sorry to hear about the paint, my opinion, and one I think shared by most is that it isn't possible to duplicate the quality of the factory paint work. Got any picts? Talk to us when you get a problem, and ask us about parts, and soon enough you will be a 928 expert. ![]() |

I don't have any pictures of it currently and I know this will make most member cringe but this car should be crushed how ever the owner loves it and wants it fixed soooo will fix it I wish it was a frame off restoration but it is destine to be a driver so is getting as close to frame off as possible. Spent couple hours on the alignment rack Friday thinking may have to replace a rear control arm as it is tweaked from a crash and can't get rear toe to set properly.
Have almost all the warning lights off now cleaned a bunch of connections and grounds and harness connectors. Only one left is Brake pad warning light but pads were replaced with pads that don't have the warning indicator wires so may have to get creative on this one. Only other dash issue so far is the volt meter reads low sits around 12volts but when tested at battery with charging system tester I have 14 volts so thinking prob more bad connections to find......... |

Thoroughly cleaning all of the dozen or so ground points can help, but the pod also has issues with a flexible circuit board you may want to replace (Roger at 928rus.com has them).
BTW I was being "funny" regarding frame off. Its just that its common to hear about restoration and when we get down to details its new tires and shocks. Good used parts are fairly cheap, if the control arm is tweaked just replace it. I've got a bad left rear wheel bearing and its cheaper for me to swap in a good used complete rear suspension than to replace the bearing directly. (I bought a parts car) Good luck and post some pictures, we can help when we can see the problem. ![]() |
