Post Pic of Timing Belt Route?
Can someone post a pic of their 16v OB? I am trying to figure out if my belt is routed correctly. Specifically around the tensioner area.

Thanks Chris! I think mine is right then. The pulley just above the tensioner doesn't spin move most of the time. Is this normal? Also, my passenger side cam gear, the TB isn't tracking on the center. This is why I was asking this question.

slightly to the front is normal as long as its not getting too close to the edge.

Right, idler near tensioner doesn't spin much.
Probably best to take some pictures of yours. My first install, tracking was off on the passenger side. Adrenaline was pumping and I had installed the passenger side gear backwards. In my case, tracking was right, but gear was in the wrong place. Flipped the gear and solved it. I think I'm still running the 84 without covers, I can shoot them to compare later if needed. They don't need to be right in the middle.

I just finished my timing belt job on my 16V and had the same issue, the belt was forward on the passenger side gear...i traced it to the tensioner pulley having a very slight slant to it because of the rounded surface of the tensioner piston. I replaced those bushings on the upper pulley (that has the bolt). THe belt i removed (when i bought the car) had been grinding itself to death on the tensioner arm, so i was careful about setting the tension correctly. Not rubbing now, but still i didn't like the idea of the belt not being centered..looks like this is fairly common.

HI surfdog! Yes, the bushing on mine is also new. Was a pain to get on. Yes, seems common, so I wont worry about it anymore. My car seems to have other gremlins now.

~⅛" (3mm) from the front of the gear is the norm with new parts, and proper tension.
Worn or bent parts notwithstanding, higher tension will make the belt ride farther back, lower towards the front. The crank gear tends to wear more at the front, pulling the belt forward. Most PKsn'r installs I've seen put the belt ~3mm from the front. ![]() thread

I'm confused. After reading the Rennlist thread, I can't figure out which side is the front of the cam gear.
So, if you're standing in front of the car, facing the engine...is the front of the cam gear the side closest to you or the one closest to the engine? |

Using the standard in the workshop manuals, all directions are from the view of someone sitting in the driver's seat.
So the front of the cam gears would be the closest to the front of the car (towards someone facing the engine).

Thanks, that's what I thought but reading through the Rennlist thread, it sort of sounded like the front of the cam gear was the side closest to the engine.

If you ask a question on the Rlist you will get all sorts of replies, good, bad, army way, air force way, navy way, something that worked once on a 924 or dad's Buick, what some engineer did once on a factory race car.
Too many watches so you never know what time it really is. Current drama, lug nut lube. BTW the "front" of the cam gear sometimes doesn't face the front. ![]() ![]() |
