928 Porsche Key

Where can I send my ignition key for a duplicate to be cut. I found a new blank in the glove box of the 1984 928 I bought but no one locally seems to have the right equipment.

Thanks,
Karen

I'm in fl but you should be able to go to a locksmith shop. They normally can make any copies especially if you have the blank.

most locksmiths don't have the right equipment to cut 928 keys

I believe 928 International does them from what I heard.

928 keys are cut at a 45 degree angle, and less than a dozen places worldwide have been posted in other threads that can reliably cut a key. If none of them are local to you, then www.keys4classics.com can cut a key for you from a couple good pictures of your key.

There was a RL thread about this recently iirc. The guy in Australia seems to have a great reputation. You send them a photo of your key and they're able to tell which code it is and cut you a new one.

Found it: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/928-forum/214617-key-cut-from-a-photogragh.html

If you only have one key, I wouldn't be sending it off in the mail or UPS. I've had too much stuff just randomly disappear and that would suck if it was your only key.

Yes we do make copies at 928 International but need the original to copy from. If sending in an "only" key insure it for a declared $1,000 value.....if it gets lost we can simply rekey all the new locks or old locks to one key. It only takes a few minutes to copy a key we always do it at our annual Sharktoberfest ....

Hi,

By any chance do you know how to get the lock cylinder out of the door? My long alarm key broke off in the lock and the locksmith can't get it out. Is there a release of some sort on the cylinder. It only pulls out about half way.

Post your model year in your signature and put a location in your profile for starters.

I've used keys for classics out of Aus and they do excellent work. When I got my car it had one key that I didn't want to lose. I sent them a photo and the key that I got works great. The really cool thing is the photo I sent them was my only one and poorly cut copy. They figured out what it was supposed to be and cut it correctly. Later I found an original key under one of my seats and the key that they made from the photo was identical.

no you have to call porsche and give them your VIN number. thats only only way you can get a PERFECT new key for your car. that is unless the key you have doesnt have much wear on it, then you can just take it to a locksmith or something. but i know that for me, my key is SUPER worn down and i had to call porsche and give them my VIN number. they made a key somehow off of that. i got it and it was BRAND NEW and it worked perfectly. not to many small businesses have the capability of making porsche keys because there is a special bit used only for those keys. its got some special amount of angle or something.

This is all well and good if you have good history on your car. If your locks were changed at some point (like mine), the VIN to make keys is useless.

I would send that blank and a working key to 928 Intl as they can cut it for you. IMHO.

Also, FYI, my father in law took a file and took a spare non-working key of mine and got it to work.
