Where to fill R134a refrigerant in '86 928S?

My 1986 928S has been converted over to R134a. I purchased a refill bottle at an auto parts store, then couldn't find where to plug it in.

I found the red high pressure side by the headlight bar, but can't find where the blue low pressure side is to fill it. Anyone have any ideas?

thanks to everyone on this site. It is tops!

John

look under the big upper radiator hose on the passenger side, near the jump-start terminal.

FYI. You just can't fill a car refrigerant by pressures. Due to the evap may be slightly to really clogged, or condensor. This causing air flow reduction which has effects on a/c system refrigerant pressures. But you should be able to get cold enough air. Don't over fill with refrigerant. If you must add refrigerant to any system, you have had a leak or the system was evacuated. When this happens oil is entrained with the refrigerant. So there is some oil missing from the system. Just keep in mind there is less oil in the system than engineered.

Will the lack of refrigerant cause the compressor not to turn on when the button is pushed? My compressor doesn't turn on, and I have heard there might be a low pressure switch or something that keeps the compressor from engaging when without enough refrigerant.

thanks for everyone's help

yes, it's on the dryer. Take the wires off and jumper them just long enough to see if the compressor comes on.

The only dryer I know is the one that drys our families clothes. What does an A/C Dryer look like?

it's just behind the front bumper, on the passenger side. I'll see if I can find a picture...

So those 2 wires just to the right of the dryer is what you would jump? Also, what view is this (what angle was the camera at)?

yours may look a little different. I think this is off an 87, but is the general idea. mine plugs into the front, rather than the top like the one in the pic. I could reach mine through the front spoiler slats.

the view is from the front of the car PS, looking towards the motor. you can see the radiator just behind it. that black bar is what raises and lowers the headlights.

On my 81 the switch is on the side of the dryer a little below the light bar. If you jump it you can see if your compressor will engage or not.

Ok guys, found the dryer. Started the car and turned on the A/C (I think - It's in German) unhooked the two leads, jumped the spades and nothing, I then reconnected them halfway and jumped them, electric fan turns on. Thoughts?

Also, in the pic, there is unhooked wires, where do these hook into?

I don't think those are the correct wires. Mine has those, but they are not the ones I jumpered. If you stoop down in front of your car, can you see the dryer through your grill? If so, you should be able to see the low pressure switch and wires.

could the rogue wire be for the headlight washer pump?

I think if you turn the A/C on in the car, and jump the connectors that go to the switch and if the compressor works its clutch should engage. If nothing then either bad clutch, connection, or shot compressor. On the early cars I think the front fan is only suppose to come on if the engine coolant reaches a certain temp. The later cars the front fan comes on whenever the a/c is on. I'll check tomorrow but I think I have the same extra wires that you do, and I don't know where they go either. I hope to get m a/c working again among other things also, before it gets too hot here in Florida. I don't know if you have been to there site but Griffiths has some good write ups on a/c workings. www.griffiths.com

Now that I look closer, psychII may be right. On mine it has a big rubber boot that the wires are in.
