What went wrong?
Engine runs rough?
Had bent valves, straightened in drill press with hammer till looked good. Ground new 45 degree angle as best as I could on bench grinder. Lapped them in. Head surfaces looked a little rough, so I took a little off with my angle grinder. I couldn't get head gaskets but the old ones looked ok so I used them. I don't get this whole 45 degree timing thing with the crank, so I guessed on that, I think it is all good as the marks were only a few teeth off, so I corrected this after going around a few revolutions. Oh yea, the lifters went in hard as I kind of chewed up the bores where they go in when getting the valves out with the hammer and socket I used. The cams were a little tight also cause I couldn't remember what caps came off where. So now if you read this and think that I would do any of it, you are wrong. I was just remembering some of the stories I heard when I was a full time machinist. Have fun. PS: I am still powder coating and cleaning parts on my 86.5, working in Florida for a few days, hope all my parts come in next week.

Remember to clean any gasket surfaces with a power ScotchBrite wheel!

You should also be able to adjust the camshafts by using a ball peen hammer on the lobes.

Yeah but its a bit late for doing that as he's already sent his parts off for powdercoating, so he can't get the cams re-coated with wrinkle finish.

after the 2nd line I was going to send someone over there to take your keys/car away.
You are obviously over qualified to work on the engine..... So lets see Hammer hammer roundy round, center, tap and grind, de edge to make it smooth. Lappy lappy to surface dull. Grind a head to make your mark, RTV so gasket sticks, Old is good so you know it work. Time the time with the cam to time , 4 20 is not the time to time to. Lifter tap and tap to go, go to tap and you will know, spring is good and sprung to see, little lobe bump, and bump to free, smooth and free the place to be Cam cap match or not, numbers to see, all fit to top of heads, Use old belt for cams to time, all stretched out is fine Stop and start to stop and go, start to stop and you will know. Thanks for the progress report

Well, from what I hear, quality machine work is highly overated, and not worth the money.
To some. |

I think I know where you went wrong.....
Those cam cap thingies absolutly cannot go back on in the same place. You must have accidentally gotten one in the same spot. All kinds of problems come from that. I had one where the steering was a little loose. Popped valve covers.... moved cam thingies..... Done!!!! Just think..... Some people charge for this stuff ![]()
