My new 928 "project"

I say project loosely, since I'm not really doing any of the work! The car I'm buying is with Mark Benton at The Nine Source, and he's taking care of it before I buy it from him.

I'm got this posted on the other forum also. I sold my Corvette to get back into a 928, and I'm making sure that this car is a suitable replacement. It actually used to be Mark Robinson's old red car that is doing the burnouts in the videos everyone knows about.

Details from the other site...

I've been working my tail off on this thing; it's coming together really nicely. I didn't anticipate all of the hours I would be putting into this thing... I'm thinking I should have asked for more for it, Jon! I thought I had a before picture of the interior (after I disassembled it, but hadn't done any work) on this SD card, but it must be on my other one. I'll post it when I find it.

Here is a list of what I have done to it thus far-

Interior:
-Replace rear quarters with super nice vinyl quarters
-Replace door panels with nice vinyl panels (no warped upper edge)
-Yank out all of the BS aftermarket stereo, rewire, install Alpine HU w/ 6.5" Alpine coaxials in rear quarters and 4.5" Rockford Fosgate coaxials in front panels
-New ashtray
-Replace glovebox door with a nicer one (Texas heat got to the original)
-Repair/reglue sides of center console
-Reglue sides of rear console
-Replace center console lower trim with low-mileage example
-Replace rear A/C switches with low-mileage examples
-Replace armrests with ones that don't have broken mounting holes
-Replace one of the rear visors
-Replace shift rod-one of the POs decided it would be a good idea to chop the top off for a custom "short shifter." Didn't work. Jon, that is why the top of the shift knob is broken off
-Remove old window tint (still have to get doors)
-Replace DS window motor

Engine bay:
-Replace all intake boots & hose clamps with low-mileage examples
-Replace ISV with a thoroughly-cleaned 68k mile ISV
-Clean MAF
-Sandblast and repaint upper belt covers
-Check belt (good), retension (was just a hair loose, still within spec)
-Replace upper fan shroud (original had a crack in it)

Other:
-New front spoiler (after paint is finished)
-Replace L&R mirror glass (right was missing, left cracked)
-Replace a few trim clips and such
-New OEM pads and rotors front and rear, repainted front calipers

Still to do:
-Paint front bumper, rear bumper, hood, front fenders, door handles
-Full detail & polish
-Realign front end
-Install a pair of VERY nice 8-way seats, almost zero wear on the bolsters
-A few other things I'm probably forgetting
-RMB
-Recover top of cassette holder

This car also has a half-inch thick stack of $18k in receipts for repair work since 2000, plus the modifications it has. TONS of new parts (I think Jon has this list if he wants to post it--I don't have it on this computer). This is a bad mamma jamma.

Attached are some "teaser" pics. MY02 5-spoke 996 wheels will be going on it. I have also attached some "before" shots of the car from the PO (who, by the way, deserves a punch in the face for several reasons). It will be almost complete by next Friday; I told Jon it would be done by then, but it is looking like I will need a little extra time. I'm too much of a perfectionist for my own good--I keep seeing small things I just have to fix before Jon gets the car. I'm working as hard as possible to get it done before Christmas.

Just got off the phone with Tom at 928 INTL, and there is a shift knob on it's way to Paul C. for recovering in Black Alcantara.

Here is the list of other work the car has had done like Mark mentioned. Some of it is probably a repeat of the work Mark has already posted.

New rotors and pads (just installed)
Refinished brake calipers in red (’86.5 S4 calipers)
Replace DS window motor
Install door panels that aren’t warped at the top edge
Install rear quarter panels that aren’t warped
New clutch disks
New rubber intake boots
Standard 8-way power seats will be professionally refinished to look like new, in the process of having this done
MY02 996 18” replica wheels with 235/40R18 and 275/35R18 Yokohamas (here is a picture of a 928 with these wheels, the wheels I have are OEM silver: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...8-post877.html) Rear tires are 70% or so and fronts are 90%.
Used, excellent condition front spoiler (extremely difficult to locate)
Front end alignment
Bleed brakes

It has a Koni suspension setup with Eibach springs—rides so much better than factory 928 suspension and looks much better lowered.

Here is a list of most (there’s more than this even, with records for everything since ~1999) of what has been done to it since 2000 or so, all of these parts are NEW:

MAF sensor
Factory BEHR aluminum radiator
Radiator hoses
Front engine seals (oil pump, front main seal, camshaft seals)
Valve cover gaskets
Clutch master cylinder
Crank position sensor
Clutch hose
Oil cooler hoses
Oil pan gasket
Tie rods
Lower control arm bushings
A/C compressor
A/C Receiver/dryer
A/C control head (over $1000 new)
A/C expansion valve
Left taillight
Rear shift coupler
Shifter ball socks
ABS sensor at one wheel
High pressure PS hose
PS suction hose
Thermostat
Plug wires
Windshield washer fluid pump
Fuel tank sender
Headlight washer fluid pump
Felt window guides
CV boots
Heater control valve
Upper hatch latch
Hatch release motor
Lower hatch latch
DS mirror motor
Ground strap
Lower fan shroud

There is probably a bit more between emails that I am missing, but as you can see, this is going to be one SORTED car.

Red 928

Hey, I can tell you for a first hand fact that Mark has given you good information about this car. I have worked on it , Touched it and Drooled on it. I have even tried to talk Mark into keeping it due to the amount of time and effort that has gone into this car. I work for Mark several days a week turning wrenches. Mark is a perfectionist in every sense of the word and I know you will be happy with this car. I would buy it myself if I didn't have several of my own. Mark has taken the time to replace any hardware the PO used that he didn't feel was correct. Small things make a big difference with the 928's and this car will be very nice when completed. The quarter panels do look wonderful and the rest is coming together very nicely. I hope you will come to the shop sometime and say hello in person as it is nice to put a face with the cars we work on.

I would love to come by to help! Work keeps me from getting out that way during the week unfortunately. I'll be by at the very least to pick it up! I appreciate all the work, it'll get taken care of properly!

Oh, make sure to wipe the drool off!

You don't need to worry as Mark makes me wipe up my mess when I leave. I love the Manual transmissions and wish my car "Blitzkrieg" had one in it rather than an auto with issues.

Not as much as one might think! Let's say right around market value…

Yep, I've discussed some the PO stuff with Mark and it's older owner Mark Robinson. They seem to think pretty similarly.

It's in very good hands though. You don't know how long I've waited for some newer pictures!

This will be one car you need to keep and not one of the Slam Bam Thank You Mam junkers you see all the time.

I didn't know you were getting the new front spoiler as it didn't have a mark on it when I removed it from the other car. I have never had a nicer part in my hands at any time and actually wanted it for one of my cars. You better hope it gets put on before I get to work on Monday !!!

I need to start hiding stuff in different places.

Update...

"Interior... finished! Coin holder is out (will go back in when I pull the door panel back off to remove the window tint and reinstall the exterior handle). Also, PS large door speaker is not correct, it is just in there for the photo--the coaxials I had in the front doors were faulty, so I have some new ones on the way that should arrive today.

Attached are some "before" shots. Side of car is to show you the excellent condition of the body (rear quarter trim has been repaired, bumper is now off and stripped). The smaller photos are pictures from when I purchased the car. Sport seats (Jon knows this) were not original to the car and are currently sitting, uncovered, while I decide what to do about new covers. The old covers were demolished--they look a lot better in these photos than they really were.

"After" pictures coming in the next post. "

They have been busy down in SC!

"Now for the after shots. I was talking to Donnie yesterday about how much it is going to suck seeing this thing go! All it needs is a dash and pod repair/cover and you would have a stellar interior. Sorry for it taking longer than initially expected, but I've really put some hours into extra items I didn't plan on doing in the beginning. ALL switches have been tested, all questionable/non-working switches have been replaced. It's just waiting in a shift knob! She's a beaut.

Rear deck carpet matches better in person than it does in the photos. Also attached is a photo of the repainted calipers/new rotors. They have a bit of surface rust from laying around for a few months, but I painted the hats to keep them from rusting as well and to look nicer behind the open 5-spokes."

Damn Jon, you are going to give me a run for my money if we end up going head to head at a concours event and I suspect now that you are a 928 owner in your own right I probably can't expect your help on MY CARS if we are competing! DANG IT! You have been well trained in the detailers arts!
