Fluctuating voltage: fixed.
I bought a voltage stabilizer from a Japanese company. Product is called "Raizin". Just a cap pack you bolt up to the battery. Instantly cured my fluctuating voltage problem. Perfectly stable now.
As the engine heated up, heat soak set in and the volts slowly dropped from 14 to 13, but crazy random dipping now. The exhaust is quieter, the heavy burble when I let off the gas is reduced. The car's running great, $45 off eBay. Money well spent. I hope it lasts a long time. |

Interesting. I would love to hear your thoughts on this after a couple months of testing. What's the technology involved in this?

A hunking great capacitor and and inductor to smooth out the voltage transients! Sort of like the LC networks used on big power amps and cross over networks to improve bass response!

Four or five caps in a plastic box. That's all I know, and it works.

Yes, if you put a big capacitor ( or network of same) across the battery you will stabilize the voltage, fast rise time ( to charge) and slow to deplete, and the volts look to stay constant. Try disconnecting the battery with the device in place and watch how long the 12v stays present!

The voltage gage moves on all 5 of mine.
Including the 86 with new battery, new Bosch-rebuilt alt and all grounds and fuse box polished clean. Normal. Go drive it.

+ 1 on what Chris said all mine fluctuate, i ignore it.
- looks like you bought the infamous Japanese flux capacitor :-)

I just wish'd I could get 14 volts at all times, instead of during warmup only.

Why? Mine never see that. Really, enjoy the car. You bought it for the right money and its really a great vehicle.

Maleficio, don't worry about it - if you want an accurate voltage reading run wires from the battery up to a digital voltmeter !
I have owned 928's for over 30 years now, and a fluctuating voltage reading on the console has never worried me. Drive, enjoy and don't be a worry head. regards Neil

Doesn't matter.
But if you have such an urge to fix stuff, might be time to get an engineering degree at Virginia Tech. Just don't mess up the car.

A cap set will mess up the car?
![]() It works as advertised. It doesn't make more volts, just stabilizes what the alt makes. It works well. |

Wont the caps put a small drain on the battery?

Now how does that happen? I never heard of losing your Chapter 30 Bennys to divorce. If your the Soldier and put money into it, then it's yours.

Ah, now I see the benefits. I do remember back in the day when you would put in a hugeass Capacitor when you ran a super huge Sub/Amp. So the Cap hold some of the charge so your gauge doesn't bounce, as well as dimming lights with the Bass.
Fosgate has one. I bet this is the same idea.
