Ignition switch question

I own a 1982 928. I have a new ignition switch that i'm trying to put in. Do I have to pull out the center console to replace it if so how? Also what kind of screws are holding it on? Allen, phillips, or some special tool?

there is a thread on here about how to take out the pod,and re-install,may have come to me from MPDANO.i have a pic of the paper but its a little hard to read.

Those directions look good....no need to remove any of the center console.

NOTE...when putting the switch in. Make sure the switch is in the OFF position. They must test them from the manufacturer and will sometimes leave it in the ON position. I installed one in the ON position and as soon as the battery was connected everything came alive and the key could not be moved in either direction.

I've done it countless times without removing the steering wheel. It's a little more surgical but nothing for the previous owner of a Fiat X1/9
My way is to just undo the cover from under the binnacle, take the allens out, leave the electronics plugged in and very gently manuever the right side of the binnacle intact with the instrument cluster up and over the igntion switch arm of the steering column. It might take some slight yanking, but I've never broken anything. One time the cluster came unplugged, but it just plugs back in. It's a 20 minute process if you're careful and have some hair on your peaches. The switch comes off the back of the column (under the binnacle) with two screws. Easy as pie. Oh yeah, important thing. Getting the binnacle out from between the blinkers can be a little tricky. Wiggle them around the binnacle by switching them or holding them in whatever manueverable position they will go without breaking. Like it said, it's not that hard. I've never broken anything.

This is one job where you really need to disconnect the battery first or you will have a big mess.

I agree about disconnecting the battery. I'm saying leave the electronics to the binnacle plugged in. You should always disconnect the battery when working on anything.

Just wondering why you are replacing the ignition switch. Are you fixing some kind of starting problem?
