Differences between engine changes in 928

I have two different year models of 928, 1982 with the 4.5L and a 1985 with the 5.0L. The 1982 is a very nice riding car, but there are so many differences between the two in terms of power and general "feel". Is the major change only in the engines or in the transmissions as well? The 82 is a "nice ride" that my wife enjoys to drive, but the 85 she hates because she is afraid of it. It seems to have ALOT more power, trans shifting (both auto) seems to be more sport style than cadillac smooth. Was there more changes than just the engine? thanks rex

Pretty sure there isn't much difference in the 1982 and 1985 except for engine and trans. 3 to 4 speed is also huge. It was 1986.5 when a lot of the S4 pieces showed up on it. Hence why it's a desirable model if you like the OB style.

82 is a 220 hp 3 spd auto, 85 is a 288 hp 4 spd auto, but if you feel a BIG difference between them in normal driving something may be out of adjustment on one or both of them. Side by side from a stop, floor them both and the 85 should pull away, but not leave the first car exactly in the dust, just pull away a second or so faster to 60 mph.

Maybe something has been done to give the 85 a snappier feel like aftermarket chips in the brains.
