key code for 928

Hi Everyone, Just bought a 1978 928 with no key. Anyone out there know were to find a key code for this car? thanks john

Owners manual sometimes, but records on the early cars are VERY poor.

Put your location in your profile for potential local help.

How sure are you that the locks are all original?

Have you turned the seller upside down and given them a good shake to see if a key can't be found?

You could try a local Porsche dealer using the VIN, or just pull the easiest to remove lock and send it out to have a key made to fit at one of the two or three places in the world that know how.

Might be easier to find someone parting a car and get the full set with keys. You could try 928intl.com and see what they want for a set.

Provide Porsche dealer w/ title to copy, your photo ID matching the name on the title and $100. You will have key in less than a week (mine was three days & worked all locks). IF the locks are original the key will work.
It appears the key is OEM only.... (except for a slight few who cut from a digital photo of the "key you do not have")

...or just buy this on eBay and then do the tumbler filing for all the other locks. With the Dealer, your "hoping and praying" they are Original to the car.

First you need a special Porsche Black. Trusting a Hardware Store or even a Locksmith would be sketchy. There are trusted places which I would use. I did the new Key using a photo of my key with awesome results.

Hardware store, including Home Depot, can NOT cut a 928 key. The blank is difficult to obtain and cutting is specialized.
You can purchase a cylinder and red key thru ebay for $99.97. Then you have an ignition key w/o alarm option. You will need a locksmith to re-key the 2 doors, the glove box, the gas cap, and the rear hatch unless you do not need to lock your car or fill the gas tank. There's another $100. You might even need to replace the gas cap once it's removed and damaged. Add $25.
Others are correct; you will hope and pray; the OEM key from Porsche records may not fit because the PO changed locks. With the OEM key, you at least have an OEM key to start over. In either case, it could be $100 OR it could be expensive spelled: P-O-R-S-C-H-E. Maybe the PO did NOT change the locks

I was surprised; my OEM key from the dealer fit ALL the cylinders.. central locking and alarm work. I paid $105... my problem was solved (one correct OEM key opens all my locks; no "extra" key for the locks I'd have to replace from a third supplier) in three days; my prayers were answered

I have no reason to worry about re-keying locks. I have two black keys and two red keys...I simply want a 3rd black key to have on hand.
I see plenty of aftermarket key blanks on ebay for $15. Are they shaped really weird where the average locksmith couldn't make a duplicate?

OK If you have OEM keys you know the design. I believe the person in Australia was cutting OEM keys with a digital photo of your OEM key. As mentioned, Leo has had success with this method.
I have heard the term milled to refer to the Porsche method.
Sorry I misquoted you. I was generally referring to one w/o an OEM key at the start

I know of 5 places in the world that reliably cut keys, and they provide a blank with the cutting fee.

From what I understand NOT ALL Locksmith's can do this type of cut....

However, I called 2 places in my local area that will cut most Porsche keys. I even mentioned it was a Porsche 928 key, and they said "Yup" we can do it....For a fee"

Apparently, they cut keys for many German automobiles, and have all the equip needed

If you really wanna go cheapskate. My spare key for my Euro was made by my father in law. I had a spare key that didn't fit anything, it was already cut to another car, he took my small triangle file and filed it to match my working Euro key. To this day, I still use it.

The locksmith I was referred to by the Porsche dealership was unable to cut a key for me. The way he explained it, there's a very deep cut that his machine was unable to do and could not guarantee that manual filing would work, so I told him forget it. The blanks alone were $35 bucks.

I am considering ordering from the dealer. They have to be cut in Atlanta. $115.

Why bother. Use the Keys4classics link in the thread, send them a picture of your current key and they send you a brand spanking new key cut to your picture and they will also tell you the key code. All for under $50. An easy decision if you ask me. I've used this company and they are AWESOME! Nuff said
