Does anyone know what this problem might be?
first gear sounds smooth, second gear runs up to about 3 grand and as I slightly let off the gas pedal I hear a grinding noise coming from the foot well or just in front of me in the engine compartment. It almost sounds like bearings rolling around. I can shift into neutral and it will go away and it will not do it if I just rev the engine in neutral. The engine sounds fine. It also does this in third gear. I've just driven it around town and never had it in fourth or fifth. I'm assuming it will do it in those gears as well.
could the bearings in the torque tube be going out? Thanks for any input.

run it on the freeway, shift very slow-ride clutch longer gears are toast in trany. engine is good-replace or rebuild trany-my guess? much more knowledgeable people on here can help you with trany issues.

I would think it's the trany, but why is the noise coming from in front of me instead of behind me. I have a little trany whine in all gears like you usually just hear in reverse but that is a seperate issue (i think) and I can hear that noise behind me, not in front.
Any other suggestions?

Throw out bearing maybe? I have the same issue with other cars, and that's what it turned out to be. Just a thought.

Throw out bearing, more than likely. If its coming from the front, its not the transmission... Sometimes it seems people forget the tranny is in the back. Maybe torque tube bearings?
Wanna post us a video of what its doing?

TO bearing noises will change with clutch release/engagement. If it shifts okay it's probably not the tranny. Syncros are the weak point of early trannys. The other stuff doesn't seem to have issues. It could be the torque tube bearings. Drive noises are hard to isolate because the sounds travel up and down the torque tube

I have a torque tube bearing out in the 86 and it's a constant whine/rattle. Took it into Gregg's Auto Haus in Boise and thats what he diagnosed it to be. I'm in town hit me up if you want and I'll take a listen and see if she sounds the same.

Hey Spooled, call me at 794-5017 if you're still in boise. That would be awesome.
Thanks btw everyone, the car is having a hard time shifting into reverse. I have to shut the car off to get it in without a little grind. I also don't know if a video would catch the noise. I'll give it a try though.
