Hi Dave, is the windshield broken? If not i'd leave it in for painting. If so wear eye protection removing it, glass particles fly everywhere.
The windshield sealant used doesn't dry out if original and would likely mean no corrosion that you could not see. I have an '83 also and I did remove it because it was cracked.
No corrosion at all behind glass in channel.
Lets see some pics of bodywork needed.
and where in PA are you?
Matt

Be more specific, top trim or side?? What rubber side strips? for your door glass. 928 International has it all used, or new.

For the last year or so I've had a problem with an idle that hunts (stalling - 900 rpm). It seemed worse on hot days. I had done an intake refresh that I hoped would cure my issues, but the fluctuating idle speed remained. I had checked the usual suspects - MAF, the temp II switch, the O2 sensor and vacuum leaks. I did find some leaking HVAC actuators and replaced them which helped but did not fix it. I recently swapped in a spare LH computer I had purchased and the idle speed became constant but about 500 rpm higher. It is now idling at around 1100 rpm.

During my research on this issue, I had heard you should be able to hear the throttle position switch click when the throttle cable is pulled. I could not hear a click and when I did the intake refresh and installed the new TPS, I simply centered it without really checking it. Today I dug into the intake again - argh! The good news - the TPS is now positioned correctly. I also followed Dwayne (Dwayne's Garage) and loosened up the flappy valve spring which I hope will improve throttle response.

First problem, the little plastic end caps came off some of the fuel injectors when I removed them and dropped down into the heads. I was able to retrieve all but one and there is no sign of it anywhere. I think it must have come off and burned up some time ago. The second problem - a large, plastic vacuum y-connector broke. It may have broken previously and would explain why my vacuum was around 17 or 18 inches of Hg instead of the expected 21. All I can do now is order the parts and wait. This is so frustrating - sigh.

The top windshield trim clips should already be attached to your roof. If they are missing you need to call 928 International for them. Once you have them we can tell you how to attach.

Oh you meant your rub strips, good idea to remove them. How do you plan to fill steel and aluminum holes? Do you have a mig and tig?

Niles, sorry to hear that, did you figure out the 'hunting' at idle though?

My (Motronic) '86 Carrera developed a hunt at idle when warm only. It is extremely annoying. I went through everything with no luck.

I discovered it was the performance chip that i had installed maybe 10 years prior that had gone bad. (Autoauthority brand) The 'warm' symptom may indicate a solder joint which expands and is losing continuity.

I popped the stock (o.e.) chip back in the 911, and the problem was solved and never came back.

Niles 06-16-2013 04:38 AM

Yeah, I think the LH computer may be deteriorating. Putting in a replacement seems to have stopped it, but now it's idling fast - so the badly positioned TPS and the broken vacuum connector may be causing the fast idle.

Sounds like you have it covered, nice S4 BTW. Cayenne wheels, you must have some rough roads out back.

I did a few more RS mods to the interior in an effort to achieve a lighter 928 but in a way that Porsche might have done it based

on the RSA of the early 90s.

Shame I couldn't have found a non sunroof car.

May I suggest deleting the sunroof before you repaint and WYIT, side marker lights, door locks, rear wiper, front headlight squirters, side rub strips, and rear bumperettes. Add in some later style aero mirrors. Thttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1371435024.jpg

Replaced all rear light bulbs. Oh my god, that passenger side rear marker is a pain in the neck.

I took the car to a Father's Day C&C, got lots of compliments (even in a lot with a Alfa Montreal, various Ferraris, and the usual 911 suspects). Even got a semi-serious offer on it (not selling).

Tony believe me i want to, been looking for a blue headliner for non sunroof. I think i will tell Tom at 928 International to make a note regarding this for me.
I can't stand that little useless sunroof.
You cars are fabulous Tony, keep up the good work!
The way you did your GTS interior is what i meant by finishing mods right.
And please post some of your Form and Functions mods here.

Be patient and try to find a non sunroof headliner in good condition or just buy one from Mark. Blue might be tough to find. You can always wrap it in blue vinyl or leather later. I wrapped mine with a hide of leather purchased on ebay. Thank you for the compliments. Form & Function thread is especially comical in the earlier posts. Form & Function.
