A/C question
My AC was updated to 134 last year and worked for about a week.
Decided to take a look at it this afternoon with a coworker whose played around with AC a lot in the past. When we took off the caps both the High and Low side valves were both hissing. Not that this is the only problem but are the valves something I can get at like an auto zone or do I need to go to the online 928 parts sites ( 928intl/928srus etc...)? Do they sell kits? Open for tips /info .. thanks Thanks -Dan

Hi Dan,
You can get new cores for the valves, or new valves. Generally when an R12 system is converted to R134a, a conversion valve is screwed onto the old valve after removing the old core. Sometimes pretty low quality parts are used. Try ACKITS.com Automotive Air Conditioning Parts & Equipment. to see a list of available kits and parts. The proper design R134a adapter to use requires you to remove the schrader valve from the R12 service port and then screw on the R134a adapter that has its own schrader valve inside (naturally you do this when the system does not have any refrigerant in it).
The issue with the type of adapter that relies on a pin to push down on the original R12 schrader valve is that the pins don't always seat properly. And, on occasion I have seen the R134a service hose coupling bend the pin in these cheaper versions of R134a adapters. |

So I ended up evacuating the system myself, and swapping the valves out.
( What have I got to lose ).. After pumping in about 4 cans of R134a, I fired her up and it still didn't come out cold. But It doesn't appear to be leaking either.. I've got good pressure on the Hi Side, and at the firewall I can see the pipe getting nice and frosty. What is supposed to happen next? My blower works, My compressor appears to be working.. Any suggestions of what to look at next?

How many ozs. In the can...12?
That might be too much, that would be like 3 pounds....not sure what the capacity is, but you can blow the seal out of the compressor....do you have rear air? 1st you need the proper charge, but, have you checked / replaced the drier? Expansion valve? I think expansion valve may be bad.....

I read on rennlist that the valve goes every 4 or 5 years. Since it was likely original, I
spent the 20 bucks to replaced it. After that I decided to go to another shop and have the system evacuated and recharged, which I did. Still no chill. So, 1) I don't have any leaks. 2) My Expansion valve is cold on the high side, compressor seems to work. 3) My blower motor works. My condensor fan up front seems to work by running 12V dc to it, but I haven't seen it run on it's own yet. Is there a flap or something somewhere that might not be closing?

This might have something to do with it... No Sensor, or hose.

Expansion Valve (TXV, TEV): Should be warm to hot on the inlet (high) and cold to frosty on the outlet (low).
