1983 928S no start after console and pod R&R please help
Hello all,
Just got done tearing into my new Shark. Removed console and pod to clean them up and solve a few problems. Fired right up before of course, now I suspect there is an issue with the factory alarm preventing starting. I tried all the tricks, the Z plug jumper, jumping fuel pump relay just in case that was it; battery was disconnected during all my work, of course, and now I'm at a total loss. Please help! She ran so well before… Eric 83 928s 5-speed

Does the starter do anything? Does the motor turn over? Do you get dome lights, dash lights? Make sure the plug on the back of the ignition switch is seated well.

You will need to tell us more...
What hapens when you turn the ignition switch to ignition - do the pod lights illuminate? When you activate the starter - does the engine turn over? What other symptoms can you describe that help us understand what is happening? When you jumped the fuel pump relay did you hear the pump run? Alan

Sorry for not being more clear:
It cranks fine but seems like it's not getting fuel. Lights and gauges work. I suspected an inadvertent trigger of the alarm somewhere in my work, though I was very careful to remove battery power anytime I was disconnecting or connecting anything.

Don't hear pump run. Fuse/holder are clean and fresh.

get deoxit spray and use it on the front and back of the Ce panel after you remove the fuses and relays.
odds are the fuel pump fuse is passing power but its not going out the other side of the wire . NOTE top row power in , bottom row power out. so check the wire to see if its got power

Sprayed everything with contact cleaner, after stripping out all fuses and reinstalling fresh ones. Panel clean and tight already, was a bit surprised at the condition! Weird development though: when I pulled the panel to check the rear of fuse 22 mount, there was no wire connecting to the top terminal! It hadn't fallen off, there was nothing loose nearby at all. Should I route 12v to it and see if that works? Can I just jumper from another top row connection?
I'd like to trace the connection from the pump to whatever was powering it before this all happened; I feel dumb for just pulling all fuses and not paying attention to what was/wasn't there before. Stupid me thinking I could just follow the diagram ![]() Anyone know the pinout for Z plug? Does pin 6 feed 12+ to pump? Thanks for everyone's help.

![]() Here's the blank connector at the top of (what is supposed to be) fuel pump fuse. The bottom is connected to a copper bus, I'm confused as to current direction here.

What diagrams are you referencing?
22 is an open fuse holder. There isn't supposed to be a wire there. 13 is the fuel pump fuse.

No - before '85 the bottom row is fuse in and the top row fuse out.

The bottom may still be connected (as here) via a common busbar. Don't make any changes without being TOTALLY sure what you are doing - slow down and ask for multiple inputs before you act... jumper the fuel pump relay and test for 12v across the pump OR test the fuel pump with a direct supply - can it run? If not try reverse polarity for a few seconds - sometimes this clears a blockage... Alan

I was going by the fuse list in the owner's manual, which is the correct '83 version. It lists 13 as unused and 22 as the fuel pump. There is no fuse in 13 right now, so as soon as my coffee is ready I'll have a go at it and report back. Thanks guys.

We have ignition, Houston.
Replaced #13 fuse, but a new wrinkle appeared: no starter cranking. Relay practically fell apart when I pulled it, and a fresh one resulted in success. Up and running! Thanks all. This thing still has a number of electrical issues, but running and basic lights are enough for now.... Appreciate the help.

Your owners manual is possibly wrong like many of them for this year... this is a rare problem - only really happens on 1983 cars.

Yeah, that's weird, especially for something as engineering-focused as the 928. Thanks to Mrmerlin I'll have the correct printouts in the car from now on!
