Replacing ignition lock cylinder in '80 928
Hi Everybody.
I am going to attempt to replace my lock and tumbler in my ignition ( where ignition key goes in ) in my 1980 928S Euro. Does anyone have any ideas what is needed to do this? I took my car to a locksmith today and he thought one might have to take part of the dash above the gages out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. john

Remove the Pod and it will all be there in front of you. There are a couple Plates under the Steering wheel that need to be removed (3 or 4 screws), remove the Steering Wheel/Signal Stalk, then 2 (10mm) bolts holding the Pod down. Should be enough slack in the wiring to let the Pod hang.

In this picture I've drilled-out the pin that retains the lock cylinder and am threading the hole to accept a threaded allen screw instead.

On my '79 to the left (towards the center of the column) of the lock cylinder on the underside of the aluminum bar is a plug with two wires that plug into a contact. I think I see the wires in this picture.
What is this contact for?

I did exactly what Lanseer is doing. I threaded it and put a small allen screw in mine.

IIRC, that is the sensor that detect a key in the ignition. On the Stepson, I have the wires from the factory, but no sensor. I thought that was strange.
