1986 Porsche 928S Checking Fill Level Automatic Transmission
Checking Fill Level Automatic Transmission
![]() 1986 Porsche 928S 32 Valve Automatic Transmission Fill Level So got this Car Running and the Transmission seems to work Well However as the Car has been sitting I want to service the Auto Transmission with Filter and Dexron 3 Type Fluid I have Pressure washed the Area / Auto Transmission and found the White opaque plastic looking Reservoir Fill bottle . It has a Red Cap on the Top. I have not removed the Top yet as I have large hands yet and it is a very tight location . Questions (1) Exactly How do you check The Fluid Level ( I have read that you check with the Car level and the Unit warmed up Completely) " With the Red Filler Cap removed is their a Dipstick coming from it you can see ? Bottom of Cap perhaps (2) Or Perhaps Guessing here " Do you View the Fluid Level through the opaque plastic Reservoir ? I see no Level Lines on the Reservoir ( I removed a Metal Shield covering the plastic Reservoir but see no fluid perhaps because the Plastic is "opaque" / not clear . ) (3) If I am on the wrong Track " Exactly How do you check the Fluid Level. (Surely you don't just fill it until the Fluid runs out the top of the opaque plastic Reservoir ) With no dipstick or Sight Glass in site I can find I am confused as to how in the heck You check the Fluid level . I read a few Posts but no one actually tells you how to Check this ? (3) Finally what Brand Dexron 3 Do you recommend for the 1986 928S Thanks all if anyone knows the Exact Procedure Last edited by aluminum; 03-01-2016 at 11:31 AM.. |

Well...you are correct when you say that checking the ATF fluid level is a PITA...cuz it is. You do have to check it from underneath at the location that you indicated, and that is also where you fill it. So you are going to need a pump. When you remove the red filler cap you should be able to read the dip stick. When I look at my ATF reservoir there are lines which indicate whether or the level is low, but they were painted on and may not be visible on yours anymore. I do check the level with transmission warm and while the manual does recommend using dex 3, dex 4, or synthetic will work just as well. I have used synthetic on my 88 S4 for the last 5 years and have noticed smoother shifting as a result.

There should be a line on the reservoir and you should be able to see the fluid level inside. You may have to really clean the plastic and put a light on it to see. Possibly yours is low? It is a bit of trouble for sure.

Thanks all
![]() I found the Site Level Glass on the Front of the Plastic reservoir finally after cleaning ( pressure wash area ) Added 1 QT with 5/8 clear plastic hose to Funnel 6 feet long over cross member to rear of car. Centered Fluid running in site Level . Noted the Fluid rise to top with engine shutoff Via wife Assistant. Ordered a Filter Kit and well drain Trans and Converter when it arrives. Car has been sitting and I fixed several Oil leaks like cooler Lines to Rad . Just completed Front end refresh Water pump " CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL " Belt and a Roller bearing Tensioner . A month now and nothing leaks . Also found all the Oil Pan Bolts where Loose quite a bit in fact however nothing is leaking now . Not sure what is the best Trans Oil to use . some sort of Dexron 3 Anybody try Valvoline DEX/Merc ... I think I well use that and just change it Yearly Converter and all The 86 32 V drives great but Boaty compared to my 1980 16V . However the 1980 has a Steel Stabilizer Front Frame Horn to horn and is no body twisting during cornering at all. Perhaps I should check out the Front end completely . I am wondering where I can get Upper Ball Joints for the 1986 928S |

Yes Dex Merc is what you want. Car "must" be running and warm to get the proper level. While car is still on stands. Go back into the car with foot on brake, go thru each gear, then re-check level.
