Power steering issue

My ‘89 car never had a modern feel to its steering. Which I assume is normal. Or not! The rack was replaced years ago, and doesn’t have a ton of miles on it, maybe 20,000. Anyway, it’s developed squeaks on hard turns left and right at slow speeds, say backing out of the garage. I replaced the original reservoir today and no improvement. No leaks from the pump. Back in the day you could crank back and forth to eliminate air in the system. I tried that and didn’t help. Any ideas? Currently, 81,000 miles on the car.

1- Does it only happen at end of full travel with pressure on the wheel against the hydraulics ?
I.E if you are still in full turn but the steering is barely backed off from full hard turn does it go away? If so on both sides or only one side.
2- Can you pick the front of the car up and try turning the wheels fully both ways but with no tire rotation and it still happens ?

Tires on the ground only. And happens not at full extension, but close. Mostly the worst on driver side.

Squeaks like your PS belt is too loose?

No, a hydraulic one! The steering wheel shudders, not smooth on the tight turns. I’ll pop the 47 bolts on the middle panel and check belt tension, look for leaks or problems with the rack. After the A/C compressor install, the knuckle busting fuel filter replacement, solving the idle surge problem, I’m a bit worn out from on this. I’m old! Ha!

While you are in there push the boots down on the pistons and look for lines, scratches damage on them.

how old is the power steering reservoir? i recall there's some sort of filter inside it on the bottom that eventually gets clogged. the solution is to just replace the entire reservoir. it might be time to replace it with a new one which is an easy job and a $40 porsche part.
