Is there such a thing as a 9 x 16 phone dial?

Did Porsche ever offer a 9 x 16" phone dial? I've got someone who says he has a genuine pair for sale. I suspect they are fakes.

Nope, not on a 944...

A real porsche wheel has the stylized P in a triangle and the porsche part number stamped on the inside of the spokes.

If it doesn't have that, it's not a real porsche wheel.

I believe the turbo cup cars had magnesium alloy phone dials that were 9 by 16.

I e-mailed the guy to ask him about the widths and offsets of the wheels he has. Here is his reply:

"I know that these wheels were an option on my 88 944. Its on the sales sticker. Fronts are 8 inches, rears are 9 inches. I don't know the offset, how can I check?"

I'm a 911 guy and I'm not too knowledgeable about the 944, but I'm guessing 8's and 9's were NEVER a factory option on an 88 944 (or 951 for that matter). Is he smoking crack?

Yeah, I do not think 8/9s were an option. I do not know if the turbo S wheels would've been avail. as an option seperately but phone dials will not be that wide unless on a turbo cup car.

Turbo S wheels weren't phone dials anyway, and besides the Turbo S wheels are specced at 9" rear and 7" front (although the front is actually closer to 8").

Too bad the magnesium phone dials are worth their weight in gold. Expect to pay thousands if you can even find them. And yes, 16 x 7 and 16 x 9 Rear. There were some on Germany E-bay a few months back. 2500 Euros!!!

Be very careful about using that wheels table. It's from the 944 FAQ and contains numerous errors, particularly on the optional wheels. For example, look at the 16x7 & 16x8" 951 wheels. There's absolutely no way you can increase the width of a wheel and keep exactly the same offset AND backspacing. For equations and procedurs on how to measure and compute your own offsets & backspacings, check out the 944 Wheels FAQ on my 951 RacerX website.

The guy think's the wheel is 16x9" because he's measuring them incorrectly. He's measuring across from the outside to outside of the flanges, which is NOT how you measure a wheel. You have to measure it from between the insides of the flanges where the tyre-bead sits. No way to do this with the tyre on the wheel BTW. Easy way is just to read off the size & offset that's imprinted on the wheel itself.

And the magnesium 16x9" PD used on the Turbo Cup cars were some thing like over $2000... EACH!!!

Strange, appears to be working now. Could've been a congested day on the internet. The only 16x8/9" combo I can think of that fits an '88 944 would be the ClubSport wheels off a 928. The 16x8" size is extremely rare...
