what fluids do you use in your 951?

Me:

Oil: 1 quart Amsoil racing 20/50 (with Zinc Phosphorus added) + Mobil 1 15/50 for the rest.

Tranny: MTL + 75/90 mix + LSD additive

Brake: ATE Super Blue

Power Steering: have not changed this yet: suggestions? I have LOTS of leaks & what looks like normal fluid.

Coolant: Orange + distilled water + 1 bottle WaterWetter

Mark

Why would you use DexCool?

I've not owned my 951 long, but according to the service records it has had Mobil 1 synthetic for almost 10 years. The fist time i changed the oil I used conventional Caster 20W-50 with ZDDP. After a few hundred miles one time I started it up and it knocked. The car had been sitting for quite some time so I guess the oil had drained out of the rod bearings. Perhaps my rod bearings are shot (I'm changing them right now).

For coolant, I used the premix Prestone green stuff. In the US we don't really have to worry about the super special coolant. The problem is when people mix good coolant with water from their garden hose instead of distilled water. Personally, I'm too lazy to buy/mix distilled water so I just use the pre mix stuff. The water jackets in my engine look great.

I haven't done brakes on my car yet, but I plan on using the Super Blue.

When I did my transmission I was at a friend's shop. They put it on the lift so I could check some things, and while it was up I had them put in Amsoil synthetic.

DexCool actually isnt bad stuff, it gets a bad rep though from people claiming it never needs to be changed. The other problem is when its mixed with regular green stuff (sludge).

As for the stuff i use..

Oil - Redline Synthetic 10w40 or 15w50 (depends what season we are in). I was previously a Mobil 1 user but the ZDDP content sucks. The Redline still has a very high amount, and the film strength is far superior. I used to come off into the pits after a DE run with 1.5-2bar oil pressure with 15w50 Mobil 1 , basically same conditions with Redline 10w40 i have yet to see lower than 3-bar!
Brakes - ATE SuperBlue
Coolant - Regular Prestone and .. i know phosphate free is recommend but this is only an issue if you live in a place with alot of minerals in the water, IE almost all of Europe.
Power Steering - Castrol ATF is what i put in last
Transaxle - Redline 75w90NS

Washer Fluid - the cheap crap... .

Oil - Mobil1 Synthetic 15W-50. Always had great oil pressure at the track, and the car doesn't use much oil at all. I plan to try Amsoil at some point, but Mobil1 is so easy to buy and the Amsoil is not.

Trans - Swepco 201

Coolant - Zerex G-05 phosphate-free coolant

Hydraulic - ATE Super Blue

Wheel Bearing Grease - Mobil1 Synthetic (Red)

PS - Porsche

Oil - Mobil 1 Synthetic 15/50. I tried using conventional Q-State oil, but after a couple auto-X runs I would get lots of valvetrain noise, which has never occurred with the Mobil 1. No noise is a good enough idicator for me! I've always been above 2 bar oil pressure, even coming off track at a DE.

Brakes/clutch - ATE Super Blue

Coolant - Prestone.

Steering - Pentosin from the Porsche dealer.

Tranny - Royal Purple synthetic is what I used last time and seems OK.

20W-50 Redline (I don't drive it in freezing weather).
Pentosin antifreeze with Redline Water Wetter.
ATE Super Blue or Gold, alternated.
Redline MT90 in the tranny.
Valvoline ATF in the power steering.

Castrol 20w/50 or 25w/60 for track. My mechanic would actually shoot me if I used Mobil 1

Mobil 1 15/50 engine oil.
NAPA LSD gear oil
Prestone Dot 4 brake fluid
DexCool coolant
Dexron Mercron III fluid in PS
Generic wheel bearing grease

Vehicle has over 100 DE's over a period of 14 years on its clock. No problems other than oil leaks and normal wear and tear.

I run my car in cooler weather from early spring (through summer) and into late fall where temps are in the mid 30's at startup in the morning. The car gets 10-w30 Mobil 1. The oil is changed once a year in the fall with an average of 2000 mi a year. The engine is mechanically all stock with a stage 2 chip and cat delete. The oil pressure indicates 4.8 bar cold idle and fully hot idle at 3.8 bar at 900 rpm. The oil pressure rises to 4.8 bar hot engine around 1700 to 1800 rpm and stays there through the full upper rpm. Motor is quiet at all rpm. Oil consumption is around a half quart for the year.
In a few years when I retire from the old tar pit, I'd sure like to winter over for a month or so down your way.
Thanks, UncleRay

I just put penrite - 15W60 and it still makes that tapping noise on the lifters not as bad but its still there,

good oil pressure though 5+ while driving and between 4-5 when idle on warm/hot

Brought back from the dead?

I've read through the FAQ and this thread for sage advice on what to use in my newly bought 951. I found Royal Purple, Valvoline Racing synthetic, and Lucas synthetic in 5W30 at a local Auto Zone. I decided to go with the Lucas this time since it's little "cheaper" and will probably switch over to RP on the next one (not sure if it's ever had synthetic in it). I'm using a K&N oil filter.

PS: Topped off with universal ATF.

Tranny service is next on the list.

Tip for changing your brake fluid:

I use ATE Super Blue, then when it comes time to change the fluid again(every 2 years), I change to the ATE typ 200 Gold, and alternate blue then gold and so on.

The ATE typ 200 Gold is the same (same wet and dry boiling points, same viscosity, exactly the same EXCEPT for the color) as Super Blue, and you can actually see when the new fluid arrives at the brake/clutch cylinder.

if your not racing, just use kendall gt1 20w50 or 15w40 or swepco, For trans, swepco is very good . if your racing , use redline synthetic , no other synthetic . joe gibbs and brad penn for non synthetic, Think about it , if your racing, your going to change your oil after each race, redline is not worth it because your wasting the longevity factor, both brad penn joe gibbs oils have the absolute highest ppm zddp in their oils because they are race proven companies. Swepco all day for street cars, and so on, for p/s fluid, redline also makes a very nice fluid , otherwise any atf dextrol III or higher. Ams oil is ok , but not comparable to gibbs or penn
