Can a non-varioram engine be converted to varioram?

I've got a 3.6L from a 89 and was wondering how to sqeeze some more hp out of it and this crossed my mind.

Sure you can, it has been done. Personnaly I don't think it's worth the effort. I'd rather have the plastic intake (lighter) and skip the whole Varioram setup. Once you put a performance chip and exhaust on the significance of the Varioram becomes moot.

The v-ram enhances midrange and high end torque. For a street car this is very desireable. For track only the top end is where the primary focus is. The plastic manifolds w/ some good sport cams and head work will deliver some very nice top end power #s but at the expense of the bottom and midrange #s.

The swap to v-ram is very doable but not cheap. You will need the DME/ brain harness & manifolds. Given the cost I agree that it is probably not worth it. But I do know of 1 brave soul that is currently building a 3.8 v-ram out of a 964.
