964 Alarm Problem

Help!

I have a 1993 911 and I'm having problems with the factory alarm.

The alarm sets off (horn and lights) apparently for no reason and does not shut off after a short interval. It continues sometimes until the battery drains.

Three questions.

Anyone have a problem with their factory alarm?

Does anyone know how to deactivate the factory alarm?

Are there any problems adding an aftermarket alarm to a 964 like a Viper or Alpine?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

you may want to check the light switch under the front hood. if its bad and leaving the light on it will also trigger the alarm, just as if someone opens the hood, hey you asked, $0.02 worth

I've looked all over for the switch in the luggage compartment and could not find it. Can you please let me know specifically where it is? Also, the light in the luggage compartment does not come on at all. Think that may have something to do with the malfunctioning alarm?

Hi:

I own a '93 C2 and the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. The only difference is that the alarm did not continue to sound until it drained the battery; it would go off and on for random times and for no reason, but would eventually stop (after ringing for extended periods). The diagnosis was that the "brain" was fried and had to be replaced. It cost only slightly more for a Viper, so I went for it. Have had no problems with the Viper.

dkla, The light switch on the later 964's is integrated into the latching mechanism. I'm not sure if it is adjustable, but most of the microswitches are. Regards, Roy

Can you please give me more details on your fix? Sounds very similar to my issue.

- Regarding the fried "brain", what tests were done to determine this and what was the fix involved? What type of costs are involved?

- About the factory alarm. How was this deactivated before your Viper alarm was installed? Was there any other specifics that are significant to installing the new alarm to your Porsche?

-Can you let me know where you had your work done?

krauthead, i beg to differ here. the light switgh for the hood light is up in the passenger side corner of the fender wall, about three inches in from the bulkhead. (i don;t claim specific knowledge on this being the switch that ops the alarm), but they have been know to fail, or get disconnected and or break. dkla look there for the bracket then down in behind the hinge area for the wire/switch possibly laying loose.

oops! just realized that the '93 could be different then my '91, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Thank you for the replies. Still looking into some of the potential problem spots. The trunk light switch seems to be ok. The glove compartment light also seems to be functioning ok. If there are any other ideas, I'm game to look into them.

Mine got some water in it and corroded some connectors inside the unit. You can bypass the unit (drive around with no alarm) or put a new one in (part is about $275). Bridge 15 and 87a.

Thanks All for your insight. Still troubleshooting but may just deactivate the alarm and go with an aftermarket alarm with keyless entry.
