As far as I know, the outer one is not serviceable. I believe that cap is clamped on around the outer ring and you are not able to remove it.

I think you are right. We have just discovered the steps 17,18,19 describing outboard CV repacking and removing and installing of the shield inaccurate. Now since this outer part is not serviceable how does one clean it. Any sand in it will make it wear out very quickly? And this is the outer part of the shaft that is mostly exposed to movement and boot cracks. |

I wiped it oit as best as I could with paper towels and then shot brake cleaner into it, using a bucket to catch it. Not quick, not fun and best done outside so you can breathe. If you have a parts wash tank, that can be helpful as well.

While this is on the front page, I am wondering if anyone has an estimate in terms of ounces or grams of grease they used in each boot? I see lots of abstract descriptions but no actual measurements, and I'm doing this for the first time now. Thanks in advance.
