964 engine cylinder studs
I,am rebuilding a 1990 964 engine. This is a street car.A friend of mine is a porsche engine rebuilder/machinist.I,ve probably asked him too many times about the head studs,on my 964 engine. He claims that the studs are fine to use for the rebuild and he would not waste his money for a ARP upgrade. He has told me that there were a lot of problems with the early divlar studs and others but as far as the late model 964 studs he feels that there is nothing wrong with using them.I,ve changed the rod bolts to ARP.My question is what is the feeling among all the porsche guys? Are the stock 964 head studs ok to use for a rebuild? Thanks

When I rebuilt my '97 993 I replaced all of the head studs w/ the 993tt versions total cost was ~$300 extra. Well worth it. 964 studs like 3.2 will eventually break.

993 or raceware studs are definately the way to go.

While the fully threaded 993 studs are good, the 993tt(Porsche Motorspots version) are better(also not fully threaded), ARP or Raceware are even better but also lots more expensive.

Ok I,am convinced just bought a set of ARP studs.I tried to double nut them out and it seems impossilble.Does anybody no the correct way to get the studs out?I would rather not heat the stud with a torch I just put the case together with all new through bolt seals.I,am not sure if heating the stud will bother the seals. Thanks

hello the proper removal of the studds is to double nut the studd, apply a little turning force, and slowly heat around the base of the engine case were the studd threads in ,to release the loctite, and dont forget to measure the the install lenght of the studd. alex

I started to remove the studs and you would not believe the $%# luck I had,the first stud on the intake side of # one cylinder broke off at the base.It was most likely my fault,I was rushing it.I used oxy acetly and I,am not sure what happened but it broke and all of the other studs came out with out heat, can you believe it.I found the greatest porsche machinist and former race mechanic.I,ve been looking on the east coast for quite a while for someone you can trust.Just by luck I called RPM,they highly recommended Rich. This is the same guy who did my heads and rods.I like and respect Walt from CE but dealing with him and others from Cal I feel nervous most of the time, and I dont like there turn around time.I live on the east coast and Cal is just too far.Well anyways I called Rich up in a panic on friday afternoon and he said no sweat bring it over on sat morning. After we set the case up on the milling machine about an hour later the stud was drilled out and a new time cert installed.I,am ready to install my ARP studs. If any body is looking for an honest no bull machine shop call Rich at Jacksic machine he is located in jersy about an hour and fifteen minutes over the george washington bridge.Phone # 908-362-8163 .His work is outstanding his prices fair and he is very generous with his time and knowledge. His turn around time is more than reasonable.Rich is a real nice guy with no pretense.I will be bringing all my porsche maching to him in the future.
