Add new remotes

My '97 993 came to me with only one key and remote, which are worn and tired. So, I bought two replacement remotes and one more key. The service manager attempted to 'quickly' program those remotes, but had trouble. He wanted me to come back when I could leave the car for the day. After laughing at his feeble money-making attempt, I took the parts - along with the Porsche Service Bulletin for the procedure - and went home.

I now see why he was having trouble. After following the directions completely, it doesn't work. Sure, I understand the critical timing required, but there are visual and audible cues mentioned in the bulletin that I just don't see/hear. This bulletin is marked #9501 "1995 911 Carrera with M-Option 530 (Immobilizer) installed". Is it possible that there is a difference in procedure between the 1995 unit and my 1997? Keep in mind that this bulletin was given to me by my local authorized Porsche dealer, so I'm assuming it's the right one...but you never know.

Check out P-car.com for a full description of the two methods there are for re-programming 993's....

http://p-car.com/diy/remote/

It might be the same as the one you have, but it's worth a try.

Man, that is a GREAT site! I'm an old American iron hotrodder with his first Porsche, so I feel somewhat like a fish out of water. p-car. com has lots of answers.

The bulletin mentioned for the '95 Immobilizer is what I have - verbatum. My problem is, after entering the car (unlock, relock, unlock within 5 sec), switch on ignition to pos. 2, allow light to go out, turn off ignition then back on, within 10 seconds, the indicator is supposed to flash. It never does. I've tried numerous variations on the timing, but all within the defined limits. I never get to the point where I can enter the engine code.

Is there some "trick" or secret handshake I'm missing?

Thanks for the response!!

Afraid I can' t be of more help... My '95 does not have the immobilizer fitted to it... but I did add a third party remote system to the standard alarm.... Lots more details over on Rennlist.com (where there's a healthier 993 community BTW).

You might want to try over there, and you'd get a bigger audience able to assist, probably.

Cheers,

Clive.

Make sure you are doing the procedure correctly. When it says "On-off", it means to full on (turn it to the point that if you turn it any further, the car will start). The lock and unlock is done using a known good remote control - not the locking button.

You will also need the code to program the remotes. Did the advisor at the dealer give you this code? If not, you will not be able to program the remotes. You enter this code by turning the car on and off for each digit

Example: Code is 1630

After the light goes out to enter the code, you enter the code like this:

1: on-off

6: on-off (x6)

3: on-off (x3)

0: on-off (x10)

Then the light on the clock shopuld start flashing - press the button of the remote you want to program.

I believe I was turning that far (as the bulletin states, position '2'). As for unlocking the car with the remote, the instructions said to follow the "Emergency Unlockng" and "Entering the Code Numbers" procedures. "Emergency Unlocking" states, "Use the emergency unlocking procedure only if the remote control is lost, damaged, or malfunctioning...", so, I assumed that meant to use the key in the door for unlock-lock-unlock. I will try it with the remote instead.

Yes, they gave me the code.

I've never seen the flashing. The bulletin mentioned that the indicator should flash BEFORE entering the code. Let me try your suggestion.

thanks to all for the help!
