964 Heater boxes/muffler questions

Is it possible to remove the CAT, change to SS heaterboxes and use a 2in/2out muffler on a 964?
Are there SSI's available for 3.6 liter 964's?
And a dual in/dual out SS muffler?

I had mine custom made.

Cat-bypass, primary Magnaflow, and secondary by-pass. All 3" stainless steel mandrall bent.

I am almost positive that GHL or fabspeed has what you need. You should check over with the guys on rennlist. The 964 guys are top notch and will give you all the info you need.

The SSI's are really too small for a 964 at full chat.

Looks good, Bill. Are these SSI's truly for a 964 or are they modified from a 3.2? But, if they are too small, what do people do? What brand is your SS 2in/2out muffler?
What is that hose in the middle? Is the heat going from the right side over to the left and then up?
I have SSI's and a Flowthrough muffler on my SC now and want to do the same thing on a 964 when I find it.

There is only 1 size of SSI w/ permutations of flange thickness, oxygen sensor bung etc.

They are all 1 3/8" ID in the primaries and will choke a 3,6 at max revs. That is why I changed them out to B&Bs

The corrogated ss tube is the heat x-over also note the 2 x 180 bends that are also needed for heat.

Thanks, Bill. The picture looks like SSI's to me. Have you changed them since? How big are the B&B's in the primaries? I.D.? Are they the same as SSI's in design, meaning: Are the B&B's just headers, or actual heater boxes?
So, both B&B, and Flowmaster, make a SS muffler?
As for the heat, the pic looks like the SS tube just crosses over; where is the heat escaping to?
I tried SSI's, and B&B, with a search engine without success. Where are they hiding?

Here is the same engine w/ B&B 1 5/8" ID headers

and the current 3.8RS w/ the same B&Bs


As you can see there are heater boxes, but they don't pump out heat like the SSIs

So, both B&B, and Flowmaster, make a SS muffler?

Yes, I used B&B mufflers for years and had nothing but trouble w/ them, had the Fabiani/Flowmaster for ~ 5yrs now w/ no issues

Heat path starts at the carbon fiber tube here



goes through the engine tin and is distributed left and right by steel tube, the SSI setup was homemade the B&B setup uses factory 964 heat tube, heat goes through the exchangers and out at the top of the forward end where they connect to the chassis dump valves.
