How easy/difficult is it to do this? Is it a DIY install?
I want to remove my Carrera distributor and fit in the reman'd 964/993 unit I have in my possession, but just running it in single mode until I get a second Crane Ignition & Coil to drive the dual distributors. Is it just a matter of dialing the crank to a certain point, removing the single distributor and dialing the new distributor to the exact same point and installing it in place? Advice appreciated.

It is the same as installing the regular distributor.
Set the motor to TDC #1 and set the distributor to just before TDC #1. as you insert the distributor, the rotor should spin and line up with the mark. AFJ

Yeah, set the crank pulley to Z1 or TDC on #1 cylinder.
Remove the original dizzy cap and note the rotor position to make sure it is pointing to #1 spark plug. Pull the dizzy out. Remove the cap on the 964 dizzy. You should see a triangular marker along the rim of the body. That is the TDC #1 position for the rotor. The dizzy pinion gear is helical so you either have to advance or retard (not sure) the rotor position prior to insertion so when it is fully seated, the rotor lines up with the triangular marker. ![]()
