Introduction and Question (964 Gearbox)

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum. I am based in the UK (hence user name!!). I have used the site many times between 2000 to 2003 when I owned a 911 3.0 SC, picture attached below.

Having been without a 911 for 6 years now, I have decided it is time I owned one again. I have been looking for a while now, my criteria was aircooled with a galvanised body (post 74). I have always liked the 964, ever since a friend of mine bought one in 1998 (he still owns 11 years later), and decided that is the route I would take.

Then a few weeks ago the opportunity came to buy a late (1993) damaged 964 C2 (sub 90K mile car) and a clean undamaged early 964 shell. I viewed both cars and decided this was the way for me to go. I am reasonably handy with the spanners (owning and running a track/ race car for the last few), I also have the space at home with a 5mX6m garage, which will prove very useful.

The donor car is 90% complete, I aim to source the rest of the parts through Ebay, local breakers, etc), although there a couple of issues to sort. My intention is to build a 964RS replica/ recreation, this may go to the extent of seam welding (as per. Porsche Workshop Manual), although the roof replacement is unlikely. I have given myself 9 - 12 months to complete the car.

The first problem is the fact that the gearbox has sustained a damaged bell housing (whilst removed from the car). The input shaft is fine and turns without any problem, I have been offered a C4 gearbox casing, and wondered if anyone knows if the top half of the casings are interchangeable?

Any information would be greatly received.

As far as I can see the 964 G50 & G64 share the same bellhousing & diff housing. The G50/52 section is different

this part is a late 915 but it shows which section is shared on the various 964 trans

Bill - Thanks for the response and the picture.

I could not see any difference when I had a look, but always good to get confirmation (second opinion).

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again!!

Thanks Don.

I certainly will keep everyone posted regarding the gearbox.

I should be collecting the cars (shell and donor) in a few days time. The plan is to store for a few months as promised my wife that I would complete the house DIY first!!!!

Then get on with the build over winter. I had considered recording the whole build, although could end up being a fairly drawn out thread due to limited time able to spend (about 10 to 15 hours max per week) and my lack of 911/ 964 experience.

IIRC, when I broken the clutch fork boss off my belhousing, it was replaced with a C4 housing. So I believe that yes, they are all the same.

38D - Thanks for the info.

Did you do the swap yourself, was it fairly straightforward?

Finally collected the donor box tonight, all looks fine with no damage.

The box with bell housing damage also sustained damage to the input shaft, initially though it hadn't but on closer inspection runs out when spun. Does anyone know if the input shaft for the C2 box (G5003) is identical to that of the C4 (G64003)?

I intend to start a separate thread on the build of my 964 trackcar/ RS replica, the build will start sometime towards the end of summer.

Are there any threads on the forum for stripping of a G50 or G64? Thinking of having a go myself as now have a spare box to practice on.

Any pointers/ advice would be much appreciated....
