Questions about Installing a 3.6 from a 3.4

My 3.4 engine had a problem where the engine filled with coolant (intermix) and the engine is toast.

I have potentially accquired a 3.6 with 30k miles and it is complete except the DME. Harness is there but the DME itself is not.

Got a few questions:

1) Will a 3.6 fit without any issues - and what issues could I encounter?

2) Must I have a DME for the 3.6 or will the 3.4's DME work?

3) I'm planning on having this work done by my mechanic but i want to educate myself a little before talking to him.

don't have the answer but have the same problem. I'll wait for the experts to chime in.

What year is your chassis and what year is the 3.6?

Yes

In a nut shell. Yes. You need the computer for the 3.6. Also what year is your 3.4. The early 3.4 where cable run throttle. Different beast. Good luck

Sorry for the lack of detail. My car with bad engine is a 2000, 3.4, 6-spd. [which BTW, somewhat sadly, has spent only driving time outside. it still looks practically new.] The donor car is said by the engine seller to be a 2004, 3.6 Tiptronic with 35,000Mi on it before it was totalled, unoccupied, where the Doctor's wife parked it. He does not have the DME. I have info that a Tip' DME is diff than mine or any Manual tranny DME so prob the one from the donor would be useless? Maybe I should get an imprint of the cable connectors to check if they even fit? jvm

Read about your intermix problem. Some folks have repaired this.

Good chance your head has one of these.

I have done exactly what you are asking.....
2000 996 3.4 to a 7.8 dme 3.6 x51 create motor......

you can do it but...being the 7.8 dme uses a different can system so some of the components in the cat will not work without upgrading the instrument clusterand such....

you will lose cruise control, and you'll need to convert the output from the heater control to turn on the a/c.

you'll need to use a later water temp sensor.....
you'll need to run 6 additional wires iirc....will have to look at my schematics....
also the later 3.6 uses a variable fuel pump, where the 3.4 has a regulator.....i used an aftermarket fpr with aeroquip fittings and lines....

overall there are about 24-28 changes in the pins of the dme/engine harness.....

the cust who owns this particular 996 had over 20,000 track miles on it when a rod broke and punctured the starter, I was handed his broken car, a crated 3.6 x51, a 7.8 dme, and told to make it work without breaking the budget.......the car currently has done a number of track days and is running strong....

Thanks Bell, So that's what the motor looks like That looks like a lot to change at first glance. I'm looking at (hopefully) putting in a newer motor (35000mi 2004 3.6) . From what I can see It has everything on it except exhaust and was hoping to plug&play.... hoped. I could strip it to the long-block and I guess I'd be where you started and, my Q is, I'd still have to do all those things?I posted a msg for 'Bell'. jvm
