Where are the bolts that hold the extraction pump in place? Is that sealant I see down the side of the case?I have done a few of these that were installed backwards.

I removed the bolts & yes way to much sealant on the cam covers. This one isn't installed backwards, its installed sideways. Both bank1 & 2 were installed like this. This photo is cyl 4-6. the 4-6 numbers should point toward the case or in this case the flat machined area.Thank goodness for them the car wouldn't move or it would have been bang in a few miles. There is 1 more problem here & that is the true comedy of errors.

Yes I have seen that. 1-3 on a boxster is on the right side and is on the left side on a 996. The engine will run with the pumps reversed but will make a a lot of noise that comes and goes away.[The pumps are identical and people install them incorrectly. In your photo I can see the 1-3 numbers are on the seam where the cam covers bolt on. Somebody made a mistake.

You said there is another mistake does it have something to do with the numbers on the case? Does that type of pump belong on that case? I need a larger photo.

Pumps are correct, look at the color of the oil.

Looks like way too much non-Porsche approved sealant & strange colored oil too.

It doesn't appear that the case was sealed properly and H2O mixed with the oil.

I agree with all of you on the color of the oil however when Howard said another problem and comedy of errors I was looking for something else in that photo.. Somebody probably added another fluid into the engine such as coolant. This is the first time I have seen these pumps installed sideway. Usually they're reversed.

You are correct, They put the coolant in the wrong hole & oil in the other wrong hole. Thought I had a intermixer in the beginning, but not enough chocolate milkshake in the cooling system for that. Flushed cooling system 6 times & oil twice. All is good so far. I will drive this one for a few more days.

I guess you corrected all the problems and the engine is running properly. Did you get the vehicle at a good price?

I didn't buy it. I repaired it for the owner that got screwed by the previous shop.
