Scan Tool Question

Harbor Freight has a great buy on an OBD II scan tool. I know it won't read the codes on my 996 turbo, but will it reset a "check engine" light warning? I have an occasional "check engine light" problem caused by a gas cap seal issue, even though I bought a new gas cap. It rarely happens, but I've learned to reset the code by disconnecting the battery. I'd rather use a scanner. Does anyone know whether the OBD II will do what I want? Thanks. Komac

It will address some codes on a Porsche (those commonly called Global OBD II codes), but will not address many codes like air bags, PSM, ABS, and other systems. For that, you need a Porsche specific scan tool.

Thanks, JFP. Will the scanner clear the check engine light alert? That is the primary reason I'd like to buy it, Thanks. Komac

A Porsche specific tool (Durametric, PST II, PIWIS) would be able to address anything on the car, other tools may or may not be able to, depending upon what is causing the codes.

Why not just have the tank vent system diagnosed and fixed?

I'm keeping notes for when I start shopping for a 996. Which of these gizmos is best? I see the Porsche Durametric Scanner on Amazon for 175 bucks.

Depends upon how you define "best"; a used PST II (which is already out of date) will set you back a couple grand. A real PIWIS cannot be purchased, only leased (yes, I know you see them for sale all the time on the web, but they are definitely not the real item), and the current lease rate opens at just under $20K for the first year. The Durametric system is about 75-85% or so as capable as the PIWIS, and cost less than $300 with unlimited updates.
