Running engine w/o tranny on

Is there any reason I can't run the engine with the transmission off.

I replaced IMS, RMS, Oil Cooler and AOS and it seems like a very good idea to run her until its hot prior to putting the transmission back on and installing the front drive shaft and all the covers!

The engine is presently supported with a home made make shift steel bracket but I could support it with the transmission jack prior to starting it.

Only question I would have is "Why bother?".

I'm in the exact same boat. I'd like to know if I fixed the leak. Best I can tell it wouldn't damage the engine. Idling with no tranny would be similar to idling with the clutch disengaged.....I think. But it would be nice to have an opinion from someone who has done this.

"Why bother", JFP? Because it's a pain in the ass to install/remove the transmission.

That has got to take all of 5 min each way.

Why, because if there was some crud I didn't see or an o-ring out of place on the oil cooler, a hoze leaking on the AOS or the new RMS or IMS is leaking it sure would be nice to fix it before putting the tranny back on.

Perhaps some can do it in 5 minutes but the bolt on top is difficult to get at not to mention the hydraulic cylinder. I'll bet it takes me an hour or more each way.

Personally IMO I can't imagine it would create a problem with the transmission jack holding the engine back in its normal operating position .

If everything was assembled correctly, and torqued to spec, nothing should leak.

I just dropped a car off the lift that had RMS, IMS Solution, oil pump upgrade, AOS, water pump, and a clutch. Started up fine, no signs of problems or leak, went for a 20 min. drive, put it back up on the lift, and it is still bone dry, and is now back in the owner's happy hands. If you take your time and do it correctly, what you are suggesting is completely unnecessary.

OK well if anyone actually has an answer to the question, that would be great.

I was just thinking, the engine probably will not turn over without pressing on the clutch pedal and I did read not to depress the clutch with the hydraulic unit disconnected from the transmission. I'm wondering if that little electronic gizmo under the AOS behind the flywheel senses the clutch position and it can be bypassed.

You can bypass it with a jumper at the clutch pedal. The object you are referring to is the crank position sensor, if you jumper that, the car will never start.

Did you ever run your engine w/o the tranny to look for leaks? I'm just finishing putting mine back together and still thinking it would be a god idea.

While he does not need defending, I have never been led astray by JFP. He knows his stuff. I would listen.

JFP gave me lots of good advise and help. I simply don't trust my torque wrench and my own work. I accomplished numerous PM's projects with lots of hose connections and possible places for leakage and it was the first time I ever performed any of these task.
