New- Open Source Race Data Logger

This Data Logger looks very promising. It is open source and the price is really, really right. Much less than my Traqmate.

No affiliation, but I did order the $299 package for the new race car incoming in 2013.
A lot of options (Real Time Cellular streaming data, Gopro, etc)

Check it out.

Looks great. My girlfriend and I each bought one of the 299 packages plus the 55 Bluetooth addon. They've reached their 30k goal now.

Very cool. Now we get the free shift light too. I'm looking forward to checking this thing out on my new race car. However, it comes late 2013 so there will be a lot of waiting.

Forget about the data logger, do tell about the new race car. You are not allowed to tease like that....

This is what I am waiting for. I preordered it. A 818R from Factory Five. Not a Porsche, but for the cost of Cup Car maintenance you can have one of these. The Race version 818 is around 1500 pounds, then add a turbo charged WRX STI turbo motor and trans (Mid Engine). Then you use some stock suspension components off of the regular WRX.
Best of all, you build it yourself. That's what I love. Just imagine 1700 pounds with me in it and 350HP...... I think anyone would love that for a race car.

Thanks- I feel the same way with open top cars. However, it looked too fun to pass up.

Open cars are a blast if you can supress your imagination.

The tops of my helmets have born witness to where sand and rubber chunks go. A bird shat on my visor (tearoffs useful). When I split a rabbit in half, part of the upper half hit me, making this a blood sport I suppose.

Sitting on the grid in the hot sun less fun, driving in the heat less painful.

But I'd not build a low front hoop car. They must be safer than they look, or there would not be so many variations of them racing in pro and amateur series. But that front bar is comforting even if it negates some of the aero advantage the smaller frontal area provides.

But I am sure you will quickly get used to it, and stop worrying about someone's wheel coming off and sliding up your hood parallel to it. (If ever I redo the roll cage, there will be some flat steel slats in front of me - edge on your eyes see right around them).

We racers are not given to worrying overly much, or we wouldn't race.

Here are the Prototype pictures. I hear you on the roll cage. I have worried about that and may add some bars forward.

Different bar setup in the 2d set of pictures. Looks a bit sturdier, or at least more likely to be accepted instead of the two hoops in the 1st picture.

I suppose the height of attachment of the several braces to the main hoop meets standards for that? I guess they are "as high as possible" without being on a curve.

How does one get in/out? For my car with full roll cage I put a foot on top of the door (which is non-functional, and has a small tube right under the top for this very purpose) and step over the top bar and drop down in. Exiting is reverse. So the side diagonal isn't in the way of my usual scheme. This is a common enough scheme, so there must be a simple enough way.

Awsome performance potential.

Looks like a very cool car, Chad!

As for the data logger, I've been looking for this exact thing for years! User configurable inputs and outputs.

So help me with this format...I'm slow..I know.

They are taking pre-orders to fund the production, which may be ready for delivery in March 2013. Since they hit the $30,000 mark, there is a good likelihood that they will go into production and delivery in March? Correct?

What aboutthe sensors? Is there a source for all the sensors? Or will we have to searchsource for the sensors ourselves? Not too worried about this, but it sure would same me a lot of time to be able to click and buy this stuff.

I'm betting it's just an A/D converter to tapping into existing sensors.

The sensor input is 0-5v which is what most automotive sensors use. Generally speaking most aftermarket sensors should work. If they don't, you would be able to configure them through the open source nature of this unit.

The units should start shipping in march. Brent Picasso can be found on Facebook and can be easily reached for questions.

Yes. Brent has made a harness to allow the GoPro to start/stop. Since you can program the CPU, you can even program the camera to auto start/stop at a certain GPS speed for example. Your whatever you want.

It will allow multiple cameras also (only limited by digital inputs to the ECU)

This is the GoPro hd. I'm sure they're working on a GoPro 2 harness.

Yes, it has software written for the Android phone and tablet.

You should be able to access and configure the unit from the tablet. It's via a Bluetooth connection only as far as I know. I'm not sure if there was a hardwire connection. Didn't ask.

iOS for iPad is also in the works but no ETA.

The only thing I'm worried about is the tablet display use in sunlight. Usually not that good.
