Mid Engined 911 3.3 Twin Turbo

Here is the a project my father has been planning to do for years know, and this past was the year for it. We have been PCA people for years runnig our 914 w/3.2 engine in it @ DE avents to Hill Climbs. My father garage is full of he blood sweat and swears of project cars( also sporting a mid engine 1965 Mini Cooper S all steel flared running all porsche suspension) We just ggot the car back from paint and thought I would post the finally assembly of the car. It is an all steel 1974 911 with 930 frnt fenders and rear fender(Steel) The car has a full cage, lexan windows, carbon dash and doors. We are running a 3.2 with 3.3 jugs and pistons and a pair of 996TT K16 Turbos. We have mounted the 2 into 1 intercooler in the back hand steel formed duck tail. Even the wing sides are custom one off with a aluminum twin level wing. The suspension is 911 up front with RSR coil overs and big reds with 12" rotors. The rear is boxed and stiffened modified trailing arms with coilovers. We had to move the rear fenders back 3.5" but with the handy work of my father it looks factory! Coilover rears and a 915 tranny with LSD and a Wevo shift kit. The BBS wheels are just rollers we are runnig 17x9.5 & 17x11 CCW Classics.Hope you enjoy the photos, I will try to keep updating phots are we continue to put her back togther for this spring.

That 911 is a very cool project. I can't wait to see it with the engine and gearbox installed.

This is a great looking (and very cool) project, and looks like very nice work so far.

Question - for the rear suspension, did the trailing arms have to be modified to clear the engine? I see in the description in your opening post that the rear arms are modified ... Fitting an engine between the stock trailing arms would not be trivial.

Rear Trailing Arm Question

Scott,

The rear trailing arms are not factory 911 units, but modified other Porsche products. All new suspension pickup points were created for clearance. The car has the engine and transmission in place and the turbos are plumed. We are roughly a week away from firing her up for the first time!!

Thanks for your interest!

Running gear in place and all lines in place

Just some updated shots of the car. Engine, turbos, intercooler, oil tank, oil lines, fuel cell, fuel lines , brakes, and new tires all in place. Next week will be the first fire and she will be hitting the track for a DE @ Lime Rock on the 24th.

what beuty but i m totally confused are you running a regular p car boxer 6 motor with a 915 trans ? are you simply inverting the engine-trans mount... ? so that trans is in rear of motor. are you turning trans over like they did in the 935s? please post a few more pics looking from below would be great . fantastic engineering truly amazing thanks frank

Frank

Frank,

We are running a 915 with LSD and a Wevo kit. We didn't do the Upside Down tranny, we flipped the ring and pinion. The engine started life as a 3.2 Carrera, with 3.3 Turbo piston & jugs. I have included a single under car shot but will shoot more. Thanks for the intrest and looking!!

The flipped R&P 915 box is a relatively well-known upgrade in the 914 world. Also, the WEVO tail-cone and shifter setup is one of the better options for mounting and shifting a 915 box in a 914, or in any mid-engine application.

All in all it looks quite slick!

I can't really see much of the rear suspension--what Porsche(s) did you take the bits from? The trailing arm looks a little 914-ish, but it does not have the long pivot that the 914 one does. Unless the pivot points outward instead of inward? Hmm...

Yeah nice choice of the WEVO tail case for converting the trans from tail-shift to side-shift, as well as for improving the ability to mount the tail of the trans.

Did you do the 930 synchro retainer conversion for 3rd & 4th? Would be advisable for the considerable power you're going to put thru the trans.
