Cayenne S misfire cylinder 5/6
This has likely been reviewed before in the forums, so I apologize in advance. my 2003 Cayenne S with 160K miles is throwing random misfire codes in cylinder 5/6. I have replaced all of the spark plugs, and the 2 suspected coil packs, however I am still getting the misfire. When I disconnect the coil packs from 5/6 the engine firing does not change. I suspect a wire harness issue. Has anyone had a similar situation and what was the fix?

Interesting, when I was looking at my harness in my 06 Cayenne S. I saw two wires on my ignition harness that were nearly melted together, fortunately the insulation was not penetrated but if it broke through it could have started to arc across the wires. I gently separated them and put electrical tape around them then more over them to protect them against the heat coming from the engine. I'd check your wires carefully on each of 5 & 6 cylinders. Have you checked fuel injectors as well?

I have not checked the fuel injectors yet. Though I was just told by a cayenne mechanic that it could have sucked in some plastic that broke off the air cleaner and is preventing the exhaust valves from closing, thus causing a misfire symptom. I hope this isn't the case. Digging deeper...

Just curious but with 160K on the car, have you changed our your fuel pumps yet? When you replaced the spark plugs how did the old ones look coming out of 5 & 6?

Check the compression on those cylinders, that will let you know if you have a base engine problem like a bent valve. Then might be worth swapping the injectors from 4-5, 6-7. Long shot on the injectors but, would be good to know that. Otherwise I have seen the cam sensors cause odd misfire/cam sensor faults. Might be able to swap the sensors from bank 1 to bank 2 as well then see if the faults follow. Let us know!
