the start of my LS1 conversion:
about 1/2 way done with the body work.
I just received the RH basic kit, tonight I am going to go pick up my engine and drop it off at the engine builders. Since it is getting a little cold to do body work I am going to shift gears and start putting in the radiator. below are pics of where I am today. the car is down to ~1840 without the engine. there is a lot more to do... http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010391.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010392.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010395.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010396.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010397.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010399.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010400.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010390.jpg |
crazy top chop !!! will be interesting to see what it looks all painted up !
|
Where do you get a windshield now?
|
Very interesting! Will those rear quarter windows be some kind of cooling ducts?
|
CRAZY CHOP!!! I LOVE IT.
Are you going to use the turbo wing? I think a carrera wing would fit the sleek style more than the turbo. Just my two cent. GREAT JOB |
This should be interesting....getting popcorn, sitting back and watching...
|
Interesting start...can't wait to see where this goes.
|
I can't take my eyes of the photos.... !!!
|
Subscribed and looking forward to following your progress!
|
I like the customs. This could be special if all done correctly.
|
Is the other 1/2 of the body work to put a new proper canopy on it?
Looks like the poor thing has been scalped. I hope I'm not offending you. It is not my taste, but certainly seems like you know what you want. I commend your efforts in making it yours. Doug |
subscibed and want to see that LS1 in action, at the pace my build is going you will probably be up and running before me :)
18" wheels with that chop top would look evil.. |
Subscribed, is going to be a unusual project. Want to see the outcome.

i will check out the wheel sizing. |
Wow.. did you consider a 935 body? Would have really looked like a Le Mans refuge... awesome.
Still good luck with going your own way. :) |
you've been busy James, nice progress! I can see why you haven't been able to ship the seats.
I wouldn't go with the side scoops, but I like it, looks mean. Hope you are going with black or a black purple. |
Slightly different take on a famous custom Porsche? was the Mulholland RSR your inspiration for the porject or a coincidence? Could be a cool outcome. I'll keep my eyes open for your progress.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1257433846.jpg

Just a coincidence. never saw that car before.
the top of the windshield looks off on that chop. however it my personal opinion that the lowered roof line and racked windshield looks better. |
OK, so the P-car just lost a little more weight.
140# from the 2000# makes that a 7% drop to 1860# before http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PA310324.jpg after http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010388.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010389.jpg and some updated pics: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010390.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010391.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010392.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010395.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010396.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010397.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB010399.jpg |
When someone says V8 around here, people typically react a little more harshly than if you'd peed on their shoes and slapped their wives.
Looks like a cool project. With your skill at bodywork, I hope you didn't start with a pristine turbo. |
It was in ~ok~ shape when I purchased it.
I have a lot more plans for the body before it goes to paint. thanks for the positive post. I just started talking to the guy that is going to be putting in the chassis bracing and cage. as soon as we have a plan/design that will e the next step. |
Not my cup of tea.... but I think the lines would flow better now with slantnose or strosek fenders.

Good idea, I just purchased strosek fenders. Hope to have them by Friday. This will cut a lot of weight also.

Looking forward to your project. |
Nice Project!! Do you have any pics of the chop as it was in progress?
|
Hmmm.... a hard top speedster. Maybe it'll grow on me.
I think a different tail and the Strosek fenders will make that happen. |

Very creative! I think your roof line is cleaner than the Mulholland RSR version. I have seen it and the line of that car was awkward. There was a 356 on one of these threads that used 550 style cooling ductwork and an enclosed rear window intake. I will post the photo, you might find that it is more fluid that using the quarter windows. As an industrial designer I am impressed when someone applies their creativity: even to something as iconic as the 911 design study. I will look foreword to watching your vision come to fruition!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1257705188.jpg

end of the weekend.
I need to get water pump gaskets. a MAP sensor test the alternator clean and test the injectors drop off the throttle body to be ported look for headers work on some custom plumbing. http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB080441.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB080442.jpg |
To answer how I chopped the top.
I cut a 3" section out of the "A" pillar removed the "B" pillar and pie cut the "C" pillar. Then stretched the top and bottom "A's" to meet. I run 3/8 steel down the middle then started to weld back each layer. The B & C pillar's were much easier to rebuild one thing you have to remember is that the pillars are structural and you have to peal them like an onion then brace each layer as you put them back. it's not as easy as just cutting and pasting: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB080448.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv261/AAD3665/x1.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/P9180007.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/P9180020.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/P9190028.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/P9190030.jpg continued below. |

LS Exhaust option
Hi, I love the CHOP! Can't wait to see more.
I found a good set of headers that will clear the RH brackets, they are made by JBA Model 1850S-3 They were made for a LQ motor in a Suburban, but they fit great. See Pics below! Good luck. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1257785030.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1257785091.jpg |
11/9 - either the alt pulley or crank pulley is wrong.
everyday it is something... but the TB is at New Era. http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv261/AAD3665/8.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv261/AAD3665/7.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv261/AAD3665/6.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv261/AAD3665/5.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...AD3665/2-1.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...AD3665/3-1.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...AD3665/1-1.jpg |
Alternator alignment issue
Hi, I had trouble with my crank pulley / alternator alignment as well. My engine came from a corvette (LS6) and the crank pulley sites closer to the block than it would on a F Body camero/firebird LS motor. I think there are 3 different offsets for the LS crank pulley. Is it possible your motor came from a truck?
|
You have impressed the hell out of me! Nice work.

he probability put the pulley on as well. You have a good source for pulleys? Quote:
THE PACKAGE WAS LEFT IN A UPS FACILITY |
So close. Wiring this weekend then put the engine in.
Dan, from Reactive Chassis, came over tonight to measure out and talk ideas for the chassis stiffing and cage. http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100459.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100458.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100460.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100461.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100462.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100465.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100466.jpg http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...5/PB100467.jpg |
good source for pulleys
I have always liked ATI's Harmonic Balancers / Pulleys. Don't forget to buy a new bolt if you make the swap, the crank bolt is not re-useable on LS motors.
Keep the pictures coming. I am working on my fuel tank mount and radiator setup. I'll be curious to see how you route the cooling lines. I ended up running mine through the frame heating vents.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1257946937.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1257946964.jpg |
Looks like a fun build. I keep thinking you are putting the radiators in the back thus the side scoops.
