been just a bit slack the last week or so as i was waiting on news of the engine..the engine was dynoed today and hopefully will be shipped tomorrow from Mast Motorsports.. needless to say i am anxious to receive and get back to work...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1297886710.jpg

I think I can hear your transmission whimpering in fear...

the engine is crated and scheduled for shipment today..hope to receive by tuesday of next week. i removed the factory turbo tail this morning...man...those things are really heavy. i have a metal frame fiberglass top ducktail that i will most likely put on the car. personally the ducktail is my preference over any of the earlier tails. now what do i do about the porsche rear reflector?? with the lighter weight of the LS7 engine, removal of the turbo tail, and the removal of the oil tank, lines and thermostat i am hoping to reduce the rear weight of the car by at least 125 pounds. already have lexan rear window and quarter windows. probably will removed the sound pad in the rear as well....might actually reduce a few more pounds.

Subscribed.... I have an LS-2 waiting to go into my 944....... Once I finish with my race 930

finally!

picked the motor up yesterday morning and uncrated...it was almost six weeks late due to the oil pan not being available..now back to work! note that the picture is the rear of the engine...the intake has been reversed..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298454557.jpg

got the motor and transaxle in place so that i can start on the headers...using Stainless Headers kit...mock up header kit that i will use to make a mock up headers. i will send this back to them and they will fabricate a set of stainless headers. i will probably use 1 3/4 tubing into 3 inch collectors. lots more to do...i am still hoping to run a ducktail instead of a turbo tail...but the Fast intake runners are longer and thus taller. i hope that there will be enough clearance at the front of the engine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298576036.jpg

lin7310948 02-24-2011 12:22 PM

i just placed the ducktail on the car and it seems to fit ok with plenty of clearance..it is so much lighter than the factory turbo tail. it is very good quality with a steel base and fiberglass top. it was made by a fellow pelican!

headers

spent the last few days trying to determine headers. i am using a Stainless Headers kit to prototype the headers. this kit is comprised of various components that allow one to mock up headers with the engine in place. this mock up is sent to Stainless Headers and they fabricate a very nice set of custom stainless headers in the desired tube size, etc. i am going to ask for 1 7/8 tubes with a 3 inch collector. space is fairly limited in the engine bay, primarily to leave room for the muffler length. i have not decided on the muffler but would like low restriction without too much noise. i did have to remove the electric water pump bracket from the Renegade Hybrids cradle and will mount the pump up on the engine compartment rail on a new bracket. i will snap a pic of the prototype headers maybe today..

finished up on the prototype headers this afternoon. i will refit one last time in the morning and UPS them to Stainless headers. a couple of pictures..the c0ollectors will be three inches not the inch and a half pictured.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1299187936.jpg

Brilliant solution to home designed/custom headers.

lin7310948 03-17-2011 11:34 AM

finished the header kit prototype and they have them at Stainless Headers...estimate 2=3 weeks to fabricate and return. as i stated earlier my air cleaner will be in the rear seat area along with the ECU and relays and fuse box for the Mast system. i will build a suitable enclose to house the air cleaner. this will be fed by Naca ducts from the quarter windows. this should provide a more direct air route into the Fast LSX 102R intake and mass air flow meter. the ambient air temperature should be much cooler as well. the wiring harness will also enter the engine compartment through the air box enclosure as well. i also removed the rear bumper shock mounting receivers as well...most have been 5-8 pounds of steel. i did this to allow more room for the muffler on each side. wont make a decision on the headerss to mufflers until i get the headers back,as a note i used a 4 inch 30 degree aluminum piece to clear the front engine compartment cross support. and i like it that there is not clutter on top of the engine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1300390386.jpg

still awaiting the stainless headers from the fabricator...hopefully next week. about through with the engine compartment. should be rather un-encumbered compared to the turbo flat six..and much lighter. ordered R style hinges from TRE as i will run a ducktail and a couple of rear window straps to keep the lexan rear window in place.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302212619.jpg

Nice build.

Just wondering, Why dont you box in the filter in then have feed pipes run from the rear engine lid/spoiler . This way your not seeing pipes running around the cabin from the quarter windows..

carslutt 04-07-2011 02:34 PM

looks like your doing some good work. i told my wife id like to do an LS swap into my 911 and with out missing a beat she said, only if it has working AC........ haha....

lin7310948 04-07-2011 02:42 PM

herman, i will most likely run with a ducktail and not much to hook onto there. the air cleaner will be enclosed in an aluminum cover with 2 three inch ports. the tubing from the naca ducts in the quarter windows to the cover will only be 10 to 12 inches in lenght. the computer and the supporting relays and electrical hardware will be mounted in the rear firewall area as well...so the back seats will not be functional for seating..

lin7310948 04-10-2011 08:42 AM

removed the turbo tail and factory hinges and installed the ducktail using TRE 911R hinges. i put the turbo script back on just because it seemed more appropriate as the car was originally and is mostly still a 930 and it has plenty of horsepower. since i have lexan rear glass i also used TRE retention clips to keep the lexan rear window in place. most likely will mount an oil cooler ibetween the rear bumper and front of the engine in the area where there are slots. i have a space 24 inches long by 4 inches wide by 6 inches tall which should give me lots of latitude to size and place. the Mast Motorsports oil pan has two cast in ports for an oil cooler so the lines should be easy to run and very short. the authentic Ruf bumper only weighs a few pounds. i noticed that the rear of the car is noticeably higher. the LS7 as well as the ducktail probably net a minium of 75 pounds over the original turbo tail and motor.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302453675.jpg

lin7310948 04-11-2011 11:38 AM

got the ecu mounted as well as the relays and electrical stuff in the rear seat area. also cut the rear package tray panel to fit around the air cleaner. still have to pretty that up a bit and then build the air cleaner cover. lots of little things to do while waiting on headers to be built. i also ordered a setrab oil cooler today..15 by 6 by 2 inches. i will locate it between the rear bumper and the front of the motor. the oil lines with thermostat will be about 24 inches to one port and 30 inches to the other.

lin7310948 04-12-2011 03:58 AM

rolled the car out this morning. i still have to install the exhaust system and oil cooler but the rear of the car is seeing about all the weight of the ls7 conversion. it is noticeably higher overall and much moreso in the rear. i am not especially fond of the side inserts at the rear wheels...any ideas? i am considering removing them and installing stainless mesh in the opening. i will use the same approach with the front air inlet and also will do the same with the fog light openings. i will however close fog light openings before i cover them. will be some trial and error to all that stuff.. how are you other LS conversion guys doing? i will try to load a before and after picture.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302609362.jpg

stainless headers fabricated and to be shipped today. anxious to check the fit in a rather tight area... 1 7/8 inch tubing into 3 inch collector.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302619047.jpg

Innovative... AND Well Done! I haven't seen that done before but thinking about it, I'm sure it will work very well.
Don't be surprised when people start copying your idea. ;)

Good luck with the build.
