well I guess this post helped us get rid of a pest I take it?
With all the great advice & having to rethink my pricing allowance I am going to educate, lurk & look.
Just hope that pricing holds steady, good luck heading into summer I guess!

I fully expect the SC and 3.2 Carrera feeding frenzy to relax a little bit once some of the cars tucked away for winter come to market and there isn't so much pent up (panic) demand.

Hang in there and you'll find something. Just be ready to jump when the time comes. I skipped an extremely clean and well cared for '81 SC back in October because people who didn't know the market told me that it was priced too high, now I'm seeing similar cars list for $5-10k higher. Been searching for another one ever since and have still passed on a couple of deals that I kick myself over. When you find one you like and you can afford it, get it. Don't hesitate, don't hold out for a better deal, just buy it.

I hope you're right, Matt. I'm looking into a '77 model at the moment, but I don't feel as confident about it as I would an SC.

I second the plan to keep some money in reserve. You never know. Also, once you get hooked, there will always be something to fix or improve. It is always those little, and not so little, things you notice once you drive the car for a while.

I passed on a low mileage '81 ROW coupe because it was red (and had a big tail) - plus I did not know better when I started looking. I bought an '85 silver targa - great car, open air and all that. After driving it for a year there are trade offs (wind noise, body flex, etc.) in a targa, so now, I have started looking for a coupe too. If the car is the same color hopefully my wife won't notice :0 Good luck.

What I have learnt in the first month, which may or may not help perspective buyers or newbies like me
1. Is it just now or is there some real JUNK out there?!!! I don't know if its the hot market but people are trying to sell some clunkers.
2. Talking to sellers you can tell who are "Porsche" people or not. Some of my conversations now are over in two minutes. I have had two gentlemen VERY disappointed that they sold the car to someone else. One even called me for a second time to apologize.
3. Hard not to get addicted to the thrill of the hunt & expand your search into other models or raise your budget.
4. Be ready to buy & don't waist time.
5. You don't know how good a cars is until it's already gone. You need experience in the game. Better to learn lessons now than the hard way.
6. For the most part everyone on this board is great. No hidden agendas. Or maybe one, to help one another out. I thank you all, especially...well you know who you are!
7. What is said on PM stays on PM.

On with the show, please bring on spring & more cars & by the way

Keep looking Bash. I think learning that there are Porsche people and how to identify them is key. That will lead you to the right car in the end.

I've just gone through the same thing over the last few months. I was fortunate to meet some really great people and find a decent car (an 86 Meteor Gray Coupe) for a reasonable price. However, there were some real turds in the process (both cars and people). I posted WTBs in a number of places that really drew out some junk at ridiculous prices. However, it also brought out a few gems. In the end, it netted a 99% original (different tires and radio) 3.2 Carrera that needs a bit of sorting but it's a nice, solid base to start from.

What part of the country are you in Bash?

Drove a driver quality 83 sc with 97K.
No rust/ no accidents/ very original/ respray/no leaks/ no smoke/ dual Webber's-no worries in South Carolina/ turbo tie rods/ strut brace/ felt good on the road/ second owner who hasn't really driven too much in the last few years.
Took a LONG time to warm up, really drove like a slug ( Webber's? Tune up?). It felt like it wanted to "miss" under power until on the highway.The oxygen sensor light was constantly on. Druck pressure stayed between 3.5 to 4.5, even hit 5 under hard acceleration. Oil temp gauze fluctuated between low & 3/4.A lot of wind noise on a new targa top.

Concerns guys? ( ppi of course)

Depends on the asking price. The carbs really kill it for me, I'd want it to be back to the factory F.I. If you could return it to F.I. and still be under $20k, and no other hidden problems (broken head studs), then I'd probably go for it.
