IMS and RMS are the only main issues with the 996. But, the IMS issue is more concerning with the 3,4L engine ('99, '00 and '01 model year). Also, make sure everything works on the car.

I had the very same problem with my '85 911. My mechanic sort it out : it was a small cracked weld in the tach. He had to open the tach like a can.

Your concern is legitimate : I have a friend who had a blow out with old tires on his 3.2 Carrera on a road trip.
