putting a 3.3 in my SC (updated 7/21/07)

Should be a fun project. Might even throw a turbo on it some day. Purists beware.....

If it has the low compression turbo pistons you might be disappointed w/o a turbo

nope the compression ration is 10.5:1. I was able to pick up a good used engine for $450.

good used engine for $450?
That doesn't compute.

I am not an expert by any means, but are you sure you would want to turbocharge an engine that has compression ratio like that?

Compression would be dropped with the addition of forced induction. Right now the engine makes 230HP and 228 ft.lb. Here's a picture

First, let me start by defending myself against the attacks from the Porsche purists...

When I bought this car, it was a roller with no tranny or engine, and the interior was in boxes. It had been sitting for years in a shop. It's not like I took a perfectly good 911 and bastardized it. I rescued this car. Now I have a great appreciation for Porsche and it's engineering and race heritage, but I am not at a point in my life where I can afford maintain a Porsche engine, and I cannot afford to buy a used 3.0 with a $6-$8k price tag. Now I know some would say "if you can't afford to maintain a Porsche, you shouldn't buy one". Well if that's your opinion you are entitled to it, but I'm not that stuck-up. I'm gonna build what I want. I can fabricate everything I need for this conversion myself, and my time is free to me. Would it still be a cost effective conversion if this wasn't the case? Probably not, but my situation is what it is. Now if some day I decide to convert this car back to air cooled Porsche power, it could be done Very easily. Nothing about this conversion is going to require permanent modification to the chassis. The only thing I would have to do is fill the hole in the front to accommodate a front mount oil cooler (I've done it many times).ANYWAY..... that's my $0.02

As far as the conversion, I found a good used 915 tranny for $900. Like I said before, the engine was only $450. It has modern fuel injection (no CIS) and 24 valves. I made a custom radiator and shrouding to fit in the front trunk, and a custom fuel tank will sit behind them. The motor mounts will utilize the factory 911 motor mounts on the chassis and will bolt-in. I also built some custom headers and exhaust. Here are some more pictures...

The conversion isn't done yet, but it's coming along well. Hope to have it done by Christmas (when the weather is nice enough to drive it).

came from a 1992 SVX. When I show people pictures (non-Porsche enthusiasts) they can't even tell the engine doesn't belong there. Of course it will never fool any Porsche owners.

I love the sound of an air cooled Porsche 6 cylinder, but I must say, the exhaust note of this Subaru engine is AMAZING! Sounds surprisingly exotic.

Lot's of guy's on the SpyderClub site use Suby power in their 550 replica's , a couple have 3.0's out of SC's either way with the Suby power or the Porsche 6's in them the little 550's weighing in at just over a 1000 pounds really move.

May end up being the most reliable porsche ever constructed. I am thinking somewhere between 500,000 and 1,000,000 miles between engine rebuilds if maintained properly of course after all that work why wouldnt you. I think you are on to something for all those guys out there that can afford a descent roller but not a 6-8K dollar engine to go in it. Good for you and good luck on the completion.

Neat stuff. After being on the board for 7 years, I'm always open something different. Keep if coming. Besides, the RS clone approach is getting old anyway.

Thats nice to know. I'm calculating it will take me about 400 years until my rebuild with this car based on the miles I drive.
