wheel info

Intention: I want to put together a comprehensive ss of wheel and tires and what will fit where.

Problem: There are some glaring discrepancies in some of the published data. I think that some people used the wrong #s to calculate backspace and this data has been passed down as gospel w/o any one actually checking.

Solution: I need some of you guys to measure
  • edge to edge width of a given wheel and either front or back space
  • or
  • front and backspace

The more data the better

A ruler and a couple of rigid wooden sticks is all that's necessary, tires do not need to be dismounted. The more accuracy the better ie 16ths are better than 8ths

Any feed back is much appreciated.

How do you measure front space? WHat surface are you looking for? The bolt holes?

Here's what needs to be done
materials
* 2 rigid pieces of wood(slats) that fit across the diameter of the wheel, these need to be short enough to not hit the tire but long enough to lay across the outer flanges.

*1 tape measure

*a couple of long rubber bands would help hold the wood slats across the front and back face and free up your hands

2 possible methods
method 1
place the slats across the front and rear face of the wheel
measure through the spoke holes the distance between them. this is overall width
and
measure from the front piece to the mounting face, this is front space
or(easier)
measure from the back piece to the mounting face, this is backspace

method 2
measure front space and backspace

Thats all we need any 2 of the frontspace, backspace or overall width.

Pease note the overall width of an 8" wheel is not 8" no cheating I will be checking.

Are you looking for any particular wheel and / or size? If you're looking for Fuchs measurements, I have a set of 7/8x15" and a set of 7/8X16" I can measure.

Since I want to include as many different wheels as possible, all wheel data is welcome. As many different ones as you have would be great.

This is a great idea. I was thinking of starting a post a while back, something like "the definitive wheel and tire post" so we could direct all questions on that subject to one place. Something like post a picture of your car with a detailed description. Wheel sizes and offsets, tire sizes and brands, suspension mods, body mods, basically real world examples of what people have done.

Not trying to hijack your thread, just an idea for the your next project. :-)

My 9x16's are off the car, I'll measure tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Bill, Here is a graphic that might help some in getting these into uniform measurments. I'll send you some when I pull the wheels. Is it possible to get these with the wheel on?

Thanks Mike, I have that already. That's from Fikse's current site. At the old site they actually let folks know what o/s was available.

Since they no longer tell us, I want to assemble the info in one spot for comparison purposes. I have measured my Kinesis, and have some limited data on some Fuchs. I need more.

The wheels need to be measured. Some of the standard sites appear to have some incorrect data, o/s in general is not the issue. Though w/ some wheels in some sizes it is. I just want to clear this up.

What Fikse identifies as front and back space in that diagram is not the standard definition. they have convieniently left off the pertinent references

I need the info in this diagram

I am looking for the #s identified as backspace and overall rim width in the above diagram. Front space is just overall rim width less backspace, this can also be easily measured. 2 of the 3 #S are sufficient though all 3 allow error checking.

They never made it to me in time and I used the VCI (Coleman?) ones. They lasted about 300 track miles and have warped, though not as bad as I had imagined. All in all, we put 680 track miles on the car with not one major issue. That is why I love Porsche and especially the 911.

I know that there have to be more than 2 sets of easily measureable wheels out there.

I can measure a set of 6 x 15s (fuchs), 7 and 9 x 16s (fuchs), and 8 and 10 x 18 (fikses). It might take a week or so. I need to invent projects that involve removing the wheels (weighing the wheels, perhaps?). Bill...have you thought about getting people to weigh a wheel/tire combo and adding that to your SS?

Thanks guys this will be ongoing so take your time. Yes, weights and part #s if available would be good. But Sherwood has that covered pretty well, it would be good to get everything in one spot. The issue is the posted backspace. It appears that when people did their backspace calculations they used the nominal or bead width rather than the correct total width. As a result it is very difficult to precisely compare the fitment of different wheels. As more people are going for extreme fitments this issue will arise more often and be more critical.

With tires at least the manufacturers post fairly precise #s, wheel manufacturers alas do not.

I can measure my 16x7,8 951 phone dials this evening. But i'm not sure the fitment of those ugly suckers are of much use to anyone........

I'll do the 16x7,8 3 pc. Compomotives as soon as they arrive from back from straightening work in Canada......
