When posting pictures, PP will only accept 100kb max. even though it says that they will re-size them. Believe me, I tried several times without success; after a while, a message comes back from PP saying: "This file exceeds 100kb and cannot be loaded".
My Olympus camera pictures are more like 700kb JPEG. I store my pictures two ways: The Camedia albums program that came with the camera and, the "My pictures" application that comes with Windows XP. How do I re-size the pictures below 100kb so that PP will accept them? When I e-mail the pictures to someone, my E-mail program automatically re-sizes them, great, but this does not work with transferring them to PP. Help. ![]()

Hey Gunther!
I use a photo editing program by Microsoft called Digital Image Pro 9.0 to reduce my photographs and artwork, it sells for $30 or so. I think Adobe Photoshop has a "lite" version called Photoshop Elements that does the same thing relatively cheap. Now if you're into "brute-force" methods, try using the Window's ALT+PRINT SCREEN keys. This will put the top-most window image on your screen into the clip board and you can paste it into the Paint program (that comes with Windows) using CTRL+V keys and then you can crop it down to the size you want. If you can display the photo in your e-mail program at a smaller size, the "brute-force" method is an easy way to get the image into a file. Last edited by DarrylD; 04-17-2005 at 10:13 AM.. |

Is the photo upload system broken?
If you need a few pics sized for posting today you can email them to me directly and I will size them and send them back. I will be around most of the day tinkering. thenne@dslextreme.com |

Edit: Seems to be working for some of us. Gunter, just for the hell of it, reboot your computer and then try posting photos again. ![]() Last edited by TerryH; 04-17-2005 at 10:32 AM.. |

Thanks Terry, I am on Dial-up here in the boonies, it takes too long.
I am hoping that PP will fix the automatic resize feature. Thanks.Darryl: I'll try some more. There must be a way that these photo programs from Olympus allow a resizing. My e-mail program does not let me see the picture, it just says: "Do you want automatic sizing so it can be sent as e-mail"? I click yes and it sends it without letting me see anything.

Gunter,
I had the same problem as you had. Try using irfanviw. www.irfanview.com After you download it (for free), you can resize and do a lot of stuff with pictures. Hope this helps. It's worked great for me so far.

Here is what I get:
You attempted to upload a file totaling 738006 bytes. This exceeds the maximum limit of 100000 bytes (100k). Please go back and select a smaller image.

Thanks Matt: I may try that but I am always afraid to screw up somewhere with computers.
If I use this www.irfanview.com will I have to store all my pictures in this new program? Or can I "copy and paste" pictures from my album to this irfanview just for editing? Will this change my browser? I want to stay with Internet Explorer.

Gunter, you posted a photo an hour ago. Was that already sized? My Olympus camera software can edit photos to size.
Did you try rebooting your computer? I think I had your problem a while back and it worked after I coincidentally rebooted for a different reason. |

Gunter,
I posted this a few days ago: To post images I use irfanview@gmx.net freeware to reduce the file size to <100K .jpg. Download that freeware and I’ll lead you through the process. You save that image in some easy place on your hard drive. Next use the yellow “Post Reply” button at the lower right at the end of the thread. Don’t use the “Post Quick Reply” at the end of the thread – that is text only. Below the text field there is a line “Click Here to Upload a Photo…” Once in that screen, select “Browse…” and open your image file. Once open it will take you back to the previous screen where you had selected “Browse...” Now select “Upload Now” and wait until it is finished. When it is finished it will have inserted a code line at the end of your text in the text field. You can cut & paste to position the image elsewhere in the text field. When done, I always use the “Preview Reply” button to see if it is formatted the way I want and I got the correct image. Once you are happy with everything click on the “Submit Reply” yellow button and off it goes into cyberspace. In the text field I insert CR/LF (Enter key) to force the text line length. If you don’t, the line won’t word wrap until the right edge of your widest image. This paragraph I haven’t forced the word wrap. PITA for us poor sots who like 600x800 screens. Best, Grady

Here's what I do. I have many files in "My pictures" and I use my Canon software to download to those files. I use Irfanview to do lots of easy viewing and cropping and resizing. It's free, stable, and a cakewalk to use. I think it is the defacto standard among it's pricing structure!
I am sure your camera software can do it as well, but I am not familiar with it. Get IRfanview..it will be easy. And familiarize yourself with your windows explorer (not internet explorer) program for moving and tracking files easily. Make a shortcut for both on your desktop, and posting pics will take seconds.

Irfanview will not store all of the pictures in a new program. After installing and opening the program, just click the "open folder" picture and select your photo. Once you have the photo on the irfanview screen, then resize it by clickinng the "Image" bar, and go down to "resize/resample". You will then have a window open with your current dimensions. Just put in new (samller) dimensions. Then, go ahead and save the picture under JPG or similair format, and you're done. I usually resize my photos to 1000 X 668 pixels so that it won't take so long to load on PP. Here is a photo at 1000 X 668 pixels using irfanview: ![]()

Gunter,
As a little background, the photos you've taken with your camera are all stored on your hard disk as discreet files. These files can be opened (or read) with a variety of different programs. What you're doing is using another piece of software to open the photo file, and resize it. You can then save this modified file to a different location with a different name, and post it. Don't resize your original as you probably want to keep that shot at high resolution. Just save a copy. I use a program called ACDSee, and it has a built in feature to do batch resizing of photographs to a resolution you specify in preparation of emailing. It's a snap, but it's not free. Hope this gives you a little insight on what needs to happen... ianc

The upload program will help you out with resizing, but only to a point. When you upload a file, the machine resizes it down to 640x480. This keeps all of the images a nice, consistent size on the screen, so that you don't have scrolling problems with people who have small monitors.
If you are saving your files with no compression, then when the image is resized by the server, it may still be greater than 100K. I have limited the amount of processing that the server will do on pictures so that it doesn't slow down the server for the rest of the other 500 users. No other sites that I know of currently resize and reduce your pictures for you... -Wayne

Gunter:
Does your Windows come with Kodak Imaging (mine does)? Check in accesories if you have this software. Open your picture with this software and save it (with other file name) again resizing it. |
